Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Tires
#61
Random question, but is tire mounting service basically of the same quality regardless of who does it? For example, if one was spending a significant amout of time on the interstate or track at, say, 100mph, would it be worth getting tire mounting done a at more boutique shop?

I have been doing a lot of research on this since I need new tires soon. I think I am gonna wind up putting the Continental DWS on my car over the A/S3. The Michelin is supposed to have much better dry and wet performance. After speaking to the folks at tirerack, discount tire direct, and even a few local shops, there is supposed to be little to no improvement in snow performance over the A/S plus.

My understanding is that the A/S Plus is one of the best A/S tires out there for dry traction. I have a set and they seem pretty good, but I don't have summer tires on the same car to compare them to. The A/S 3 is supposed to give a more compliant ride (the Z-rated A/S Plus has very stiff sidewalls, similar to the Super Sports).

1 week of AS3
Just bought AS3 on the x sedan. size 235 55 17. handle like on rails, but the ride is rough over expansion strips, and feels like gravel sometimes if the road is not smooth or newer. The X suspension is stiffer but the ride is not much better then the old RSA's with 30000 miles.

Just get a Road Force Balance. The computer does it all: Hunter RFB
Will update with my impression compared to the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx A1-A A/S's that came with the Performance Wheel & Tire Package on my new 2013 G37x sedan.

Just ordered the PSS AS3 from Costco. Will be here by Thursday. With the instant rebate, including install fees and taxes, came to $751. Can't wait to get rid of the OEM Dunlops. Will put up my impression once I have some miles on them.

2000 Miles I still love mine. I think the ride is right for the car. I saw a post about being on rails and I don't agree they stick great but have a little mush in there sometimes...Mush for lack of a better word. Summer tires are much harsher and rail like. Waiting to see how it goes in the snow. 2011 Xs here.

***FIRST HAND REVIEW HERE***
I had Pilot Sport A/S3s put on my 2010 xS today (stock 18 inch, non staggerard, 225/50/18V). They replaced the OE Dunlop SportMaxx that had only 20k on them. I'm a tire geek from at least 25 years back. I compulsively check the pressure on all our vehicles each week, and compensate for anticipated temp change when not running nitrogen, rotate each oil change etc. (yes, I'm hard core OCD with tires). Anyway, I know it usually takes at least a few days of driving at speed before a new tire really shows its colors, and shockingly, on day one the A/S3 made my G drive like a different car. The SportMaxx did not track true, hydroplaned, was always tramlining, and had this uber weird and scary lateral wiggle when changing lanes at high speed. Every issue disappeared with the A/S3, and the car now tracks truer and smoother than I thought ever possible. If you're on the fence about these, I say pull the trigger, and you won't be disappointed.

I agree completely ...the stock tires were so awful sometimes I wonder if anyone at infinity every actually drives our cars....I also think the steering ratio is too low on my car. I am so tired of cranking the wheel to get around parking lots etc...How hard could it be to have made the ratio a little better?

Ironically I noticed today that the November 2013 Consumer Reports does a condensed review on extreme performance tires, and they rate the Pilot Sport A/S3 as tops and well ahead of everything else in the field for all season super high performance.
