lug nut question...........

Just hit 600 miles in my '13 G, and coincidentally happened to be wandering through the owner's manual and came across a line which said to get the lug nuts checked at 600 miles.

Out of curiosity, I called the service dept. at my dealer to find out how critical this is, and the guy I spoke to laughed and said in the 14 years he'd worked there he couldn't remember anyone actually doing this, but to drive on in if I wanted to and they'd check 'em out on the spot, otherwise just wait until the first scheduled service and they'd do it then.

So, has anyone here dropped everything as soon as they hit 600 miles and flown at warp speed down to get this done, or waited until a regular service, or?

I mean, what are the chances of the wheels flying off the car at this point anyway, but on the other hand, it must be in the manual for a reason.

Sorry if I'm rambling here..............

Not sure where this appears in the OM, but it's probably a legal precaution to prevent a lawsuit. Every Infiniti gets PDI'd before it ever leaves the dealership and torque values on each wheel are checked. Don't you have a torque wrench to check this yourself? Every car owner should...

the chances of the wheels actually flying off the car without you feeling some kind of vibration first is zero.

after removing the wheels and reinstalling them, you should always recheck your lugs after some normal driving. i usually check at around 200 miles and retorque them to 86ftlbs.

it's a good habit to get into, especially if you're going to be doing your own work on the car.

would you probably be fine?......probably. would it be a good idea to get it done for the peace of mind? you betchya.....doesn't take long.

You can buy a decent torque wrench for under $100, or borrow one from auto zone and do it yourself.

Hey guys - a couple of you wondered where this info was in the om, so I went back in to find out exactly where it was (Section 8, pg. 41), and I guess I was skimming instead of reading, because it turns out this is for after tire rotation.

My bad! Next time I'll make sure I know what I'm talking before I post a question. But many thanks for all the input - it was much appreciated.

It's still a good topic to bring up. Torque should be verified every time your car is in for a service that requires removing the wheel. Also when buying new wheels or adding wheel spacers you should re-check torque after a couple hundred miles.

I would have guessed the torque off the factory floor to be at 500lbs or something ridiculous.
Try removing any bolt the first time, it feels like a WWF wrestler on steroids torqued them at the factory.
