New Winter Tires - Tirerack

So Tire Rack has recently added winter tires to it's selection for the G (Sport) in 225/50-18. For the last year at least they have only offered the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 and the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60. I just jumped on and found in addition to the above two, they added the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT and Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D.

They also limited the stock rear size 245/45-18 to only the LM-60 whereas they use to also offer it in the Xi2.

Being in Northeast Ohio, I'm leaning towards going 225/50-18 all around, but not completely decided. I'm also leaning towards, but not sold, on going with Studless Ice & Snow (Michelin & Goodyear) rather than the Performance winter/snow (Bridgestone & Dunlop).

I have a RWD G37S Sedan that will be my daily driver. Looking for anyone who has reviews or experience with some of these new tires.

...I just realized the reason I was able to pull up additional tires, was by going through as if I was picking tires with new rims. Reason being is that some of the tires are only for up to 8.0" rims, not the 8.5" of the rear sport wheels. What's your view on putting an 8.0" max tire on an 8.5" rim?

I used the Blizzak LM-60 in the 225-50-18 size and my G is my daily driver. Over-all I'm very pleased with the LM-60's. Compared to my previous 08xS with the stock all season tires and commuting on the same roads the RWD with the winter tires drives better. Also is good know they are more choices available, but i'm still happy with the LM-60's.

I think I went with 225/50/18 all around in the x-ice2. They were fine but we don't get snow like you guys.

my $0.02

I recommend buying some 18" winter wheels and running 4@225/50r18. I know it will cost a few hundred more but;
1. you can easily install and rotate the tires. It will cost less than having them mounted and balanced each winter/spring. If they are directional winters you can swap front/rears and if they are bidirectional you can perform 'normal' tire rotations. This will help them last longer and provide better long term traction.
2. If you have a driveway/garage you can change and rotate them yourself
3. you can easily sell the set if/when you no longer have a need for them and re-coupe a decent amount of your cash.

I did this when I had my 07X and I'm in the process of getting some 18's for my car similar to yours. The great thing for you is the prices are much better in the USA.

^ I agree. But, I don't want to pay $450 + for TPMS sensors. I know I can run without them, but I'm too **** to deal with the light all season and know it should have them. I can also buy the TPMS elsewhere for less than half the price, but that will require breaking the tires back down, installing and re-mounting which will add more money.

So, I don't know...

I'm in Mason and just went to Discount Tire in Dayton. They matched Tire Rack prices and were quick. I ended up buying dedicated wheels/tires that I run from Thanksgiving to a little after Easter. I did not add the TPMS and just got used to the idiot light.

I use the OEM staggered setup except for winter. I went with 18x8 and 225/50/18 and XIce2 all around. Now I can swap my winter setup with in minutes at home.

BTW I think I talked to you regarding springs and having a shop in West Chester swap them.

I agonized about getting the Xi2 on 18s. My thought is, if you live in a city where they plow well, performance winter tires (like the Winter Sport 3D) are great. The Xi2 is probably better if you have to drive through deeper snow regularly. Just my 0.02. I had Blizaak REVO1 on an FWD before in Boston, didn't feel like I needed the softer Studless Ice/Snow tires. My winter set is coming in the mail in a couple of days from Tire Rack. The OEM "all-season" tires are not great on ice (or summer), should be a huge improvement.

About the TPMS -- i think warning comes on too late (took days to come on when I had a nail in a tire, it was down to like 18 psi). I ended up not getting them for my winter set. I mean, before cars came with them, we checked our own pressure regularly anyway (right?).

Good luck!

About the TPMS sensors, I regretted getting them on my winter tire/wheel set.
At the time I didn't know that I still had to visit the dealer to reprogram/calibrate the system for the new sensors and then back again when the summer set was on.
Around $100+ each visit depending on the dealer/area.

I just refuse to do that and live with the light on my dash. It doesn't bother me though, every time I notice it I remember the money I save by not bothering with it

What does everyone think of the older LM-25's? I found this set and I talk to him and he's willing to take less. They are the Sport Edition A7's from tire rack although I prefer the look of the F10's.

I had them on my 07x. They are an excellent performance winter tire. If you drive on mainly bare winter roads they are perfect for you. If your roads are frequently snow/ice covered I would stick to the non-performance winter tires.
Make sure those bolts are 5x114.3

They are 114.3 and +41 offset. Hoping the hubs fit fine.
