Weights on Rims When Balancing Wheels?

so when tire rack sent me my rims and tires already balanced ready to go i noticed the little weights on the rims were all lined up on one side. I had to go to the dealership and put two new tires on my rims because some of the tires were defective they sent me the first time. When the dealership went to balance the new tires i noticed they did not balance the weights all on one side like tire rack did. to balance them properly on the machine they had to scatter some out along the rim. Is this normal they the weights on the rims are scattered different than tire rack did them?

Yes it's normal. A different tire may require different balance points. If it's balanced, leave it alone.

Well all tires are different of course, but I've never seen wheel weights scattered on the wheel. Usually they're just applied to one point.

i think the op is talking about half as in circular half rather than inner/outer half. technically, you shouldn't have more than one weight on your rim. if the tech has experience balancing tires, he should have been able to do it in one try.

the machine gives him only one reading for weight and one position for balance, and if he puts in exactly where he's supposed to, the tire/wheel should be balanced. as far as inner and outer weights, there is a setting on the balance machine that allows for all weights inside (for cosmetic reasons) or both inner and outer balance. if you have weights scattered all over the rim edge, and on both sides, it was a sloppy job.

What he said^^^^^
Should be one weight on each side unless doing a "static" balance then there would be just one weight on the inside.

they are not completely scattered....the ones from tire rack were all lined up alone one side there were about 10 in a row. the infiniti dealership had to use two different spots to place the weights on the inner rim and then the machine said ok it waa balanced... Should i just leave it alone and trust that its balanced and everything is ok?

That sounds like either it's a low grade or defective tire. I don't think it should take 10 weights.

If you don't feel any vibrations when driving at freeway speeds, you're fine.

i wouldn't worry about having weights on two different spots. I'm sure it happens all the time.

Or wheel. If it's a low-grade "winter wheel", it's not uncommon for the wheel itself to be out of balance right out of the box.

i wouldn't mind so much on my explorer, but i'd rather not see a sloppy wheel every time i walk up to the car. also, on the next tire change, you'll have scars on the rim from weights being mounted and removed. stock sport rims from the factory use a static balance on the very center of the rim (not on either inner or outer lip)

yeah, that's what i'm thinking. most high performance tires and quality rims are wouldn't need 10 weights on one side of the wheel.
