Akward situation with Tires
Hi all, been lurking for over a year.
I have a '09 G37S manual Tranny. OEM Bridgestones still on the car.
I have just shy of 20k miles on the car. Front tires depth ranges from 1/32 of an inch on the outside to 4/32 in the middle of the tire. My rears are wearing well since I don't ever do burnouts or anything like that. A uniform 5/32 depth on both rears.
The wrench in the works is the fact that I have a large bubble in the sidewall of my left front tire. I probably have a few months left on the rear tires but obviously need to replace the fronts.
I eventually want to replace all four with Continental DW tires in sizes 275/35 245/40.
Here is my question: Can I replace my fronts right now with Conti 245/40's and wait a couple months to replace the rears or am I playing with fire?

You're fine replacing both tires on the front axle and waiting a bit for the rears. It is odd that your fronts have less tread left than the drive axle though. You must have never ever spun the tires.
1/32 is way beyond safe and needed to be replaced even without the bubble. 5/32 is getting pretty close to. Anything under 4/32 should be replaced for safety.

Thanks guys. The shoulders on the fronts are nearly bald... I'm going to replace them next week.
For where i live and the insurance premiums I already pay for a bad driving record, I'd probably get arrested for doing burnouts or spinning my tires. The cops are militant about speeding/ wreckless driving. Also, I also never liked the idea of frying my clutch since these cars are supposedly notorious for doing that.

Do you have winter tires? Do you drive your car frequently in winter?
You need to do your fronts ASAP, and as stated above, its perfectly fine to change the fronts and then change the rears later.
However, because your tread in the rear is pretty close to being changed, I would just do it all at once.... especially if you drive your car in the wintertime and dont own snow tires.
Im up in Germantown and I grew up in PA, I know how to drive in snow and I dont have winter tires. When it snows, we usually take the wifes 4x4 but I'll still drive my car when its just a light dusting. I couldnt imagine needing to drive around in the snow we had last year with the G37, nonetheless on tires which were almost bald.
If you dont have winter tires, just something to think about. Is it worth it to try to get a few extra months out of your rear tires or is it better to have a brand new set for the winter with more tread. Then theres the convenience factor of only having to take your car in once.

Get a tire gauge and check your new tires weekly.
