What you are asking for is a very long thread. People are just gonna tell you to do a search, which in this case is the right thing to do b/c you will find TONS of informative threads w/lots of pictures on how to do it.
I recently did repairs on my brother in laws bmw rims. It really depends on whether or not you want to paint and how bad the scratches are. Honestly if its not too bad you can go thru your progression of sanding and polishing and make em look pretty good. depends on how bad it is.

For a quick garage project get out the Dremel with sanding roll. Just smooth it out and then polish it. It aint gonna be perfect but better than spending $80 to a shop to do it when its just gonna get hit again eventually.

i too have some curb rash on my rim about 6inches long. every shop i checked wanted to paint the whole rim which i find is a little too extreme for a small curb rash.
