powdercoating volks, advice needed

alright so I am sick of my gt30 phantoms chipping from rock chips so I am going to get them powdercoated. probably just get the barrel done matte black like the phantoms came in. few concerns:

-read a lot about how the heat process will weaken the wheel, any input from personal experience?

-since it is a 2 piece wheel, the face and barrel must be taken apart. Volk does not release the torque settings to put the wheels back together but shops say they can put it back together safely. there are lots of people who have painted volks so figure it can be done safely.

-is powder coating strong enough to resist rock chips?

anyone recommend a shop around PA? i e-mailed a couple places but wonder if anyone personally knows a shop.

these are what my wheels look like after 3 weeks of ownership. all those white specs on the edge are rock chips..and they go around the whole rim

no wonder they discontinued the phantom edition

no way dude I've had mine for over a year and can count the scratches not chips on one hand? Where are you driving your ride through that might be why you have so many chips. Anyways I'll stay tuned to this thread to see what happens, good luck man!

Damn! I've had mine on for 15 months now and they're no where near as bad as yours.

I can see your frustration, Rays/Volk really f*cked up in the quality of their paint on the barrel.

Pls. keep us updated on Mackin's reply and your powdercoat process.

I found the torque spec of another VOLK wheel (GT-7), and it says "3. Torque spec is 45-50 pounds/ft per my email to rays eng. with loc-tite applied". This is the thread: MY350Z.COM Forums - View Single Post - Volk GT-7; DIY Stripping clearcoat & Al polish on lips

I emailed Mackin specifically for GT30, but did not hear back from them . . .

while this paint issue is driving me nuts, i know getting them powdercoated right now isnt the smartest idea for the following reasons:

-it would take about a week at most places to get them done and I dont have extra wheels to ride on (i have winter wheels but snow tires would just melt in this weather)

-i just bought the tires, and I would go wider tires if I powder coated them. that leaves me with the hassle to sell my tires right now.

so I figure ...

a. ride these wheels out until winter time, I mean they are messed up already so might so might as well get use out of my tires. when my winter wheels are on, I have plently of time to get the wheels redone

or

b. get them powder coated asap, order new tires, sell the old ones and hope everything turns out good ..all while I am carless for a week and drive around a friends car.

c. hope mackin does the right thing and take these freakn faulty wheels back!!!!!

sometimes things just dont go right, isnt life wonderful

...thanks for the post xyz! been looking for that EVERYWHERE. now i feel safe in taking apart the wheels.
