Winter tire set.... tpms a necessity??

So, I'm putting together my winter tire and rim package on tire rack... at the end of the checkout, there is an advisory that I should have them include TMPS sensors onto the 4 wheels.

However, it's for 400$ (about).... is this necessary?

It says I can use the ones on my OEM wheels.... how much is the charge if I have the tire shop transfer mine over and is it worth the trouble or am I better off buying the TMPS on the winter ones?

Also, what happens if I don't have the TMPS installed at all for the winter wheel package? Is it that the light will be on the whole time but I can still drive it right?

Thanks fellas.

J

Very basic answer is. no, you do not need the TPMS.

You will have the low tire pressure warning light though. Majority of people here dont get TPMS for winter rims. Its only for a few months anyway

If you can stand to look at a tiny orange exclamation mark like this - I wouldn't bother...

It's split pretty 50/50 when people call me up. Lots don't see the point in spending the $, others want all operating as normal. Really up to the user.

Cool.. so no TMPS in times of recession then. LOL.... thanks fellas!

One last question, what happens when I have the summer rims/wheels placed back in? Does the tire place charge to get the TMPS back online?

Nothing special has to be done when you put the TMPS wheels back on. You drive the car for a while and the light goes off.

If you go with new sensors they need to be registered using CONSULT-II or another OBDII tool. Or something like this.

I talked to the dealer today about the second set of sensors I'm having put into my winter wheels. They advised me that I would have to bring the car in every time I switched the wheels to get sensors re-registered; even if I put all 4 wheels back in the same position they came off of.

$60 x 2 every year = $120 a year for nothing gained accept for not having the TMPS light on during the winter.

Some dealers will do it for free, and some charge well over 100+ for to reprogram them.

Basically if you get a cool dealer who'll do it for free its worth buying a 2nd set for around 100, if youre dealer charges you each time, its not worth it.
