What?!?! No way does it snow 30-40 days a year. Maybe there is snow on the ground 30-40 days a year but not on the streets. Take last fridays snowstorm for example. Streets were clear on Saturday.
For anyone that might be interested, I did some research on tire chains/cables and the only ones that will not scratch our rims are made by Thule. They're called "K Summit" and they cost $399!! F*ck that! I think I'll just pick up a set of used 18" rims off of ebay and throw some winter tires on them.

I know I'm gonna get killed for this one but here goes...
It only snows like 3 days a year here and I'm not buying separate rims/tires for those 3 days. I figured I would just get a ride to work on those days.
But, in case i cant I wanted to know if anyone has used (or if they even make) tire chains/cables for our tires? I could have sworn I saw a porsche with some sort of tire cables on the tires last winter.
Has anyone ever used them? If so, do you have any recommendations? I have the G37S and the tires dont have much of a sidewall. I dont want these cables scratching my rims.
Thanks!

With the current state of the economy, pick up a used beater SUV! I saw some really nice old 4Runners and Tahoes around here going for $2K-$3K because people "can't afford the gas" on them. You can probably find a beater with >100K mi for under $1K if you look around a bit. And 26mpg of premium is still more expensive than 18mpg of regular, so the gas mileage excuse doesn't make any sense. If you get 3 winters out of a $1K beater, that's a better investment than winter wheels/tires IMO.

I was thinking of buing a used SUV but dont feel like paying another $1500/year in insurance. Cheaper to just get a set of 18's with winter tires.

My saying is "If its snowin I aint goin"!
I drove my 350Z for 4 1/2 years and I have learned not to drive it in the snow, luckly I have the option to work from home. Also my wife lets me use her Murano on really bad snow days but besides this past snow storm we rarely get hit with snow up in NYC\North Eastern NJ.
