Adaptive cruise control problems?

i'm new to using the adaptive cruise control, but from my understanding, all I need to do is set the speed I want to go and if the car senses that the car in front of me is going slower, it is supposed to slow down right? The little "car" indicator light is suppose to come on saying that it senses a car in front of me.

It has not been doing this but there are no lights on my dash indicating that the front sensor is malfunctioning. Can someone enlighten me?

You have to modes...regular cruise and adaptive cruise control. If I'm not mistaken it should always default to adaptive cruise when you first turn it on. To change between the two mode I think all you have to do is push the on button again after its on and the picture with the arrow and 3 bars should go away. You should also have between 1 and 3 bars showing the range of the adaptive cruise control that you have selected. The picture of the car only appears once the radar sensor detects a car in front of you but it wont slow down then. It only slows down once you get inside of the range or distance that you have set.

Have you tried using the DCA without using the adaptive cruise control? That's the button on the steering wheel with the car with rings around it. It should do to things as you get close to a car. It should push the accelerator up against a car and it should also slow the car down or even bring it to a complete stop.

My understanding of the adaptive cruise control is as you've described. I've not used DCA by itself but I can try on my next trip out. With cruise control, the car does not behave as you've mentioned. The wiper is set to off, the front bumper (and sensor is clean) the weather is overcast and dry. There was no reason that it shouldn't have worked. All Driver assist settings are on per the nav screen. It doesn't sense the car in front of me (no car icon). I'm also out of 4 yr/60 K mile warranty. Is this covered under something else? If I take it in, will I be charged for it?

Check it out and see because they use the same sensor. Also when you used the ACC which setting did you have it on 1 bar or 3 bars? How far were you from the other car? If the DCA doesn't work before I head to the dealership I would pull the owners manual out and check the fuses. If you don't have an extended warranty then most likely it won't be covered unless you have a good relationship with your dealer and if it's a serious issue then they might goodwill the repair.

Also check the switch by your left knee...make sure the button with the rings around the car has the green light on....and when you turn DCA on you should get the little green icon on you instrument panel bottom center with the car look like 2 cars about to collide with one emitting radar waves.

I set it to 3 bars with a nearest car a good 1/2 mile ahead of me. I set it to a speed and approached the car. Had to put on the brakes myself.

Everything is on as you said. DCA icons come on, push switch near the bottom is on (I think it's an amber color). I have not checked the fuses but will do that today. Wouldn't a light come on if it wasn't working?

I've only owned the car for a week and it ran out of warranty on 10/31. I doubt the dealership that I use will do it unfortunately. They're not ****s by any means, they just wont do it because they would be taking the hit.

Oh...you are way to far away....lol. The sensor detects any car within 390 ft. The long range is only about 200 ft...if you have it set to long (3 bars) then once you get inside the 390 the car will show and if you get within 200 ft the car will slow to maintain that distance.

That's why your car isn't doing anything....you are too far away...lol

It doesn't detect a car within 15 feet of me!

I'm not expecting it to react within 1/2 mile.

Scenario: Car ahead is 1/2 mile ahead going lets say 70 mph. I approach the car with 3 bars set at 75 mph. Eventually, as I approach the rear of the car, I expect that the car will "react" within reasonably, 20 feet. I let the car go until the car ahead of me is within 5 feet before I manually hit the brakes to avoid rear ending it.

Oh....i was thinking you were 1/2 mile and expecting it to react...no...something is definitely wrong...is your car CPO? If so, I believe it's covered under that. If not I would check all fuses and make sure the sensor is clean and has no visual damage. I used both the DCA and ICC this morning and it worked perfectly...brought the car to a complete stop. So something is definitely wrong.

The only time mine has issues was with an 18 wheeler with some funny trailer that the sensor couldn't detect.

The sensor is a little dirty, but there's nothing caked on it. I will clean that first and check it out on the way home from work. If it still doesn't work, I'll check out the fuses for it.

Not CPO and out of basic warranty, so unless it's covered by another warranty, any repairs will be out of pocket.

I hope it's something simple like it being dirty...maybe the dealer will goodwill it....all they can say is no...but try the DCA on your way too because if it works then the sensor itself is fine...

The DCA works inconsistently for Forward Collision. Lane Departure works fine so I'm wondering if it's different sensors that see that. I cleaned it with invisible glass cleaner and it still didn't work. No fuses were burnt. I'll try my dealer and see if they will goodwill fix it.

DCA, ACC, IBA all use the front sensor in the bottom of the bumper on the drivers side. The LPW uses the camera at the top of the windshield. And BSW uses two radars that are located somewhere behind the rear bumper. So if it's an issue it's with the front sensor.

I did just think about something....do you have all the actual service records? There is a reflash of the ECM and TCM and something else that I had done to both my M and QX because they both have the tech package. I had it done because I noticed that my vehicle seemed like it was surging when I used ACC. I wonder if you computers are up to date with reflashes. That's something you can ask the service dept. when you go. Their is a TSB for issues with 2011s with the Tech package.

Thanks for the great info. I do not have any of their service records but I'm sure they could look it up with my VIN. I bought the car at a Hyundai dealership and that was one of the first things I asked. I'll see if I can find the TSB you mentioned. Like I said, there are no lights indicating that the front sensor is malfunctioning and if a reflash of the software will fix this problem, I'll take it.

when I brought the car in for the steering wheel trim replacement, I did ask if all of the software was up to date and the service rep said it was so...IDK. If it's going to be out of pocket, I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Right now, it's way to expensive to fix, unless the part quote is wrong.

I also noticed that there is a gap between the sensor and the mounting hole in the bumper. Is it suppose to be like this?

Yes...there should be a gap between the hole in the bumper and the sensor.

I found the TSB for my QX...I believe it is the same for both vehicles....ITB11-020. Hopefully this is your problem. If not I would definitely see if they will goodwill the repair or go back to the dealership you bought it from and let them know...see if they can do something for you.
