What is the reason to "stretch" your tires on the rims?

I see a number of cars with this done and don't understand the reason - can someone explain?

But not wider tires? That leaves the rim exposed to more damage without tire protection.

Is this all to get a deeper lip?

It's basically for people to try to reach hellaflush status or be somewhere near it. Some people take it to ridiculous levels but most people here pull if off nicely. Lip or no lip, hellaflush does not discriminate.

wide wheels + slammed + wide (proper) fitting tires = tires rubbing, fenders burnt and disfigured

wide wheels + slammed + narrow (stretched) tires = a bit extra clearance to prevent rubbing issues, fender damage, etc..

This is basic info... there's also other factors such as camber/camber kit, spacers, fender pull/roll,

There's some key words in what's been said already. If you truly want know more, Google "Hellaflush" and check out StanceNation.com

Not to mention a safety issue for the tires...the sidewalls of tires are made to provide support vertically, and stretching the tire making it more horizontal takes away from it's integrity.

It just begs for rim damage or blow out.
Amazed more people don't destroy rims by doing this.

Not to split hairs here but did Infiniti choose that option as well going with stretched tires on the sport version? LOL.

The tires on the sport OEM wheels are not stretched at all. Not even close.

They are not stretched in the eyes of the hella flush crowd but they do have a mild strectch, as any tire that goes inward towards the top can be considered stretched. I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

I understand what you're saying. But some tires naturally have a more rounded shoulder profile and some are more square. Stretching a tire is putting a tire on a wheel that's designed for a wider tire than you're using. Putting the OEM 225 on the 8.5" wide wheel is not stretching at all becasue it is designed for a tire that width. Putting a 195 on the same wheel is stretching.

Hahaha best answer yet. It just looks awesome for hella flush setups, but is it practical hmmm maybe not depending on the extremes.

You can have both , flush (function) vs hella flush (form)

For proper vert form, you have to stretch it

Sept North GA Mountain run, you know what's up
