You can wire the LEDs to any source you want. I would wire them to a switch personally because LEDs don't work well with heat. A switch can prolong the life of the LEDs a little longer. It is a pain to get them replaced since everything is internally.
Thanks Wei. Yes, wiring them to a switch would prolong the life of them. These LED's should still last you a long time since they've seen very little use

Wish those LEDs were a little whiter! Or is just the pics that make them look so blue? Any idea what the temps on the LEDs are?
