Are you smoking crack? You are telling me that Allentown, PA with it's 100,000 or so inhabitants is anything near living in a city like Las Veags? It's not Mayberry by any stretch of the imagination, but it sure as hell ain't Vegas. And yes, I've actually been to (through) Allentown once many years ago. I've been to Vegas a lot. It's a downgrade. A better place to live and raise a family without question, but extremely rustic for a young dude like the OP used to living in Sin City.

lol no, but are you smoking crack to decipher me saying PA is far from hicksville, then saying it's the same as Vegas.

I'm just saying PA is far from hicksville, being one of the most populous states in the country, it's not a hick state lol. It does have it's rural areas, but it also has a few major metropolises too.

But I'll admit Allentown sucks, Philly and Pittsburgh are perfectly fine for a single guy 20-40

No. He said it's far from Hicksville. And I'll agree with him. There are some towns VERY close to Allentown that are most definitely Hicksville but not Allentown.

I think the OP realizes that the only cities that would be anything like living in Las Vegas would be the major ones (Boston, NYC, Philly, DC, LA, Chicago, etc)

And yes, I've actually been to (through) Allentown once many years ago. I've been to Vegas a lot.
And both have changed a LOT over the years. When were you in Allentown? In the 25 or so years I've been familiar with Allentown it has changed a lot. There is a definitive hood there. Any city with a hood would qualify as NOT being Hicksville in my books. And Vegas has changed a lot too. I was there last October after not having been for 15+ years and it grew exponentially.

but extremely rustic for a young dude like the OP used to living in Sin City.
yeah, it'll be different for him but he'll be close enough to action. Hour and a half to Philly or NYC and if he really needs gambling, there is a new casino 15 minutes away in Bethlehem. For more gambling, within a 30-45 minute drive there are 2 or 3 other casinos. An hour or a little more would have him in Atlantic City.

Not to compare (but I guess we are... now) but what else do you have outside of the CITY of Las Vegas? Really? There's not nearly as much within a 2-hour drive of Vegas as you'd have from Allentown.

It is the first state which must have a tax break for the homeowner if they have seven or more rusting cars in the yard for use as miscellaneous "storage" units.

The OP will definitely have culture shock moving from LV to Allentown. I did the reverse move many years ago from Pittsburgh to LV and then on to California. The mentality is very different between east and west coast. Living in a small town like Allentown, you will definitely feel it.

PA guys,

I apologize if I have offended your quaint little burgh. I'll stand by my judgment of Allentown being a hick town relative to Vegas though, sorry. I never said PA in general was Hicksville. Yes, I've heard of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. They are large metropolitan cities. No, I haven't been to Allentown lately. I have no reason or desire to. Maybe I'll listen to the Billy Joel song again today.

We apparently have differing definitions of what constitutes Hicksville. The mere presence of "hood" has nothing to do with it IMO. I live in a vast state that has some of the largest and most cosmopolitan areas in the country and the world, and also places that don't even show on a map. And everything in between. Allentown fits somewhere in the everything in between. Yes, I know it's close to civilization. I suppose I'll let the OP post back if he feels like it and comment on the local "scene", G meets locally, and how he feels about the change in general; after all it's only his opinion that matters. Having met him I can guess how he will feel about the switch but I'll await his firsthand judgment after he's settled in.

Good luck Ryan!
