What Teens Don't Know About Cars
I couldn't find a more appropriate section to post this in.
This video was part of this news article - Help your teen drive safer - chicagotribune.com - mainly an article about teen driver safety. However, what really takes the cake the video that follows.
Either these teens are very stupid, or the parents never took the time to explain the concepts to their new drivers. Draw your own conclusions.

Haha, so very very true... But I think it is too micro in it's accused reach... I would be willing to bet that a disgusting majority of adults and most women (go ahead and call me sexest) turn out some of the same responses...

Just like there are requirements for math, science, reading, writing, at least every HS student should take a basic auto's class at some point in their hs career.
I spent 2 semesters in shop class rebuilding parts of my first used clunker. It seemed like a natural progression to go from working on bicycles to cars (couldn't afford to pay someone to fix either )

As of right now my internet sucks (in a hotel) but I got to 2:31 and couldn't watch anymore! This sounds like my GF "I don't know honey, its making weird noises....Whats my oil filter again? cabin air filter? are you telling me I need to replace my tires?"

Whatever happened to drivers ed in school? They taught some things about the operation and maintenance of cars back when I took it in the 70's. It seems that most schools these days don't do driver's ed anymore. But parents do need to take an active role in basic car knowledge with their kids.
Problem is, there's probably a lot of adults these days that don't know much either.
Of course I already knew a lot about cars and trucks...I always worked with my dad when he worked on his cars in the 70's. I also worked on my grandpa's farm and learned how to drive pickups and farm equipment at 13 years old. On the farm, you had to work on your equipment and keep it running...that meant auto's too.
I have my kids help me whenever I work on their cars and sometimes mine...they help with oil changes and other maintenance items...even my 19 year old daughter will get dirty and actually crawl under the car and help.
My 16 year old son helped me rebuild the complete front suspension and steering on my daughter's Mitsubishi Eclipse not too long ago.
He has also helped me with some of the restoration on my K5 Blazer...although he always preferred working on my 350Z more than the Blazer. Now he has his own vehicle and keeps track of when maintenance needs to be done...he let's me know when it's time.
Now if I could only get my daughter to keep the interior of her car clean...I think that's just a teenage girl thing.

In spite of that video it’s my sense is that teenagers know a lot about cars. When my kids were that age they quickly learned how to check fluids, tire pressures, etc., and were able to install some aftermarket parts (not on MY car, of course). I only wish I had taught them better to avoid tickets; they had to learn that themselves as they grew up.

While I was watching that my wife heard and started to TRY to answer some of the questions. She knew a few but others not so much, I would pause it to get her answer.
What is a spark plug? "Something that covers something up to keep it from sparking!" LOL
Anyway, that turned into a teaching session, haha.
