Anyone here ever terminate cat 5 cable?

The media box in my house was left bare. they ran all the cat 5 to the wall in all the rooms, but at the media box, they didnt terminate the cat 5 cables. I dont have the tools to strip the wires and wanted to know if anyone has experience doing this so that I can either borrow the tool to strip the wires or get some help doing so. I'm guessing its all a matter of separating the wires and crimping them in place.

Can anyone give me a hand with this I need to do this for 4 of the wires in the house. (one end only)

The process is simple. Follow this guideline.

You can pick up crimp tools, tester and ends at Radio Shack but will be screwed on price. I'm not 100% sure but Lowes might have the tools and etc you need.

F u Lek

Im not quite sure what you are asking, but I have to score the cables to get the twisted pairs out and unravel to put in to a RJ45 terminator. The 4 cables I perfrom or have this performed on will be used to go into my router so that I can supply 4 rooms in the house with internet.

All that is there right now are the unterminated cat 5 cables.

Whatcha talkin about Willis? Follow diagram A and you should be set. I normally strip 1-2" of cable insulation, trim the fiberglass stuff inside, untangle the wires and place them in order before trimming it down to 1/2" to crimp them. The trick to get them all lined up straight to go into the connector is by pinching all 8 wires while holding then horizontal and wiggle them up and down in a wave pattern. This magically straighten out the wires before trimming them. Otherwise you'll have the hardest time trying to jam all 8 wires into the RJ45 connector. Best results come after you test your cables.

If you want, I have the whole toolkit that'll take care of that for ya.

Strip, crimp, plugs, etc.

Lemme know if you want to borrow it.

Either that, dump the wired stuff and buy some new wireless multimedia solutions

Why are you messing with cat 5? Can't you just connect a wireless router off of your media box?

I could but Id rather not have all of the devices in the house running wireless.

Lastly, the media box is in the basement and would likely not get that great of a signal all the way on the top floor without upgrading the router also.

Ah got it... In case you ever want wireless, you could setup an access point off one of your wall outlets in the middle level of your house to maximize coverage and signal strength. Should be cheaper than a regular router.

What matters most is that the individual wires on the end you're crimping are placed into the RJ-45 connector in the exact same orientation as the ones on the other end of the cable.
