? bout driver improvement

I'm lookin at the VA driver improvement classes to take before I go to court (tomorrow lol) but all them say court required? So can I still take them and will they still count? Also what do 5 safe driving points mean?

You can go to the VA Dmv website or just google it about VA Driver Improvement Courses. The classes are not court required, you can take it voluntarily like I did and use it to lower your insurance by 15% for upto 2 years.

You can only take the course every two years and it takes 5 points off your license. MD has a different point scale than VA. You can get up to six points off your license in VA and upto 3 points in MD.

Most safe driving courses are on Wednesday and Saturday, so I think your out of luck on this one. The cost is $75 on Wed and $65 on Saturday and it is eight hours long.

I think you might have to take a knee on this one and take it after you go to court or you may have too if the judge makes you.

I took a Driver Improvement Class online a few years ago. It was great. You registered and could go through the material for free. But if you wanted to take the test and have them report the fact that you took the class to the MVA you had to pay like $75 or something. No class time, no fuss, no muss. I think the test was in person though. This was a looooong time ago. This was also in MD so I don't know how it would work with VA. Good luck.

Addendum...

I took it at awidmeyer.com...but they list a bunch of internet schools

AAA has a driver improvement class in Chantilly once a month, it's on either a Saturday or Sunday. I think it's 7 hours and $50 if you're not a member, $40 or $50 if you are.

There are some online courses you can take here in VA. They are a bit pricey, but it beats missing a day of work and whatnot.

The phone number is 540-869-3559 and ask about the online classes. I coach HS wrestling and some of the gym teachers run it and others have to take it in order to drive county vehicles etc etc. We would all huddle around the coaches office computer and discuss the questions and answer. Its really easy...

EDIT* Its called Green Apple Driving School.

I am a MD driver and did this for a VA reckless ticket.

www.trafficschoolonline.com

Select voluntary. It takes a while, but everything is done online. Definitely do it before going to court.

As for the +5 points, it does not really do anything for you if you are a MD driver because points don't transfer from VA to MD, only the infraction itself shows up on your record. But, it may help your insurance out...not 100% on that issue.
