Go to court, plead guilty with explanation and hopefully judge will just make you pay fine and you will not get any points. Explain that you are a student and can not afford an increased insurance premium. Don't forget to tell them you have a clean record, would like to keep it that way and you will be much more careful in the future. Good luck.

I'd spend a day in court. If he gets lucky and gets an easy going judge that see that he has no prior history, he might have the option of taking the driver's education to reduce the points. However, given the 20 mph over, realistically I don't see how any judge will come out and let him off the hook that easy. I don't know about all counties in VA but in Prince Williams county courts, you aren't really given the chance to explain your case. It's either plead not guilty and come back with a lawyer on another date or plead guilty and hope for the best. The only other option is to wait for your turn and tell the judge you'd like to talk to the prosecuting attorney and see if he's willing to reduce the ticket and recommended driver's education to the judge. If the ticket is a few hundred dollars, I'd be very willing to hire a lawyer for that amount. I've witness a few cases with 15+ mph over tickets and those with lawyers got it reduced to driving education and small fines. With the court systems now, everyone is buddy buddy and the judges know the lawyers and willing to cut them (rather than you) a break.

OK, here is what you do.......
1) Go to court
2) Dress like a thug
3) When the judge asks How do you plea.....Tell him F YOU!!
4) The judge will get mad, tell him to F his mother
5) Judge gets madder and holds you in contempt, totally forgets about the stupid ticket has you thrown in jail for the weekend, and your record stays clean!!!

Or just plead guilty and hope for a merciful judge!

Kevin, I've been in your situation... the good thing about first time offenders is that you can plead guilty, you will do the driving class and if you manage to keep your record clean for 3 months after the driving class, the points wont go on your record, therefore, your insurance wont go up. But make sure you dont be stupid like myself and get another ticket any time soon.... especially now with so many cops around, slow it down and dont be in a hurry. Good Luck. Go to court, plead guilty...tell them its your first offense and you are extremely sorry, unless you are willing to spend $$$ on a lawyer... then its a total different story.
