Techniques for launching?
#16
Thank you there were some actual useful answers form some of you. And yes, that is correct, Alex57r, thank you - if I wanted a 6mt I would have bought a 6mt. Apparently most g37 owners don't spend a lot of time at the dragstrip because if they did, they would know that the fastest cars all have AT's; historically, various and sundry 4-speed ATs populate the 9 and 8 second vehicles. And for the record, the 7AT sedan is faster than the 6MT coupe - go and read C&D, Motor Trend, or any number of other car rags. You can find the articles using the search function.
One thing for sure, in those videos, launching techniques make a difference on a AWD car. As long as there is no wheelspin, the sooner its in the powerband the faster your time. How much difference? eeh.... Its still a heavy car...

Watch the 1/4 mi launch of the G37 on this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuri5zIqbTw
If wheelspin didn't help, they would avoid it.

Wheelspin gets your engine further into its powerband, but you're not putting the power to the ground. It's being wasted in the form of wheelspin.
Remember, Static friction > kinetic friction.
You want to put enough power down, that you're putting more to the ground than the threshold to maintain kinetic friction, but not enough to break static friction.
Ideally, you want to be right under static friction cap.

My 08 G37 coupe with 5at did a 13.6@ 102mph. The best thing to do is to leave it on DS mode and floor it. At the light, I did step on both the brake and the gas and kept the rev at around 1600-1800 rpm. Once the light turned green, I instantly let go of the brake and the car just takes off. Oh I forgot to mention I was running on 20s so I think its not a bad time. I sold the G and got a IsF and took it to the track. My IsF is doing a flat 13.0 @ 111mph so I know im having traction problem with it right now. I just gotta keep working at it till I hit a 12.6 i guess my tires are too new and are not sticky enough yet. Not to mention the stock 255s are kinda thin for a 400+ hp car.
