Stillen Exhaust Drone, WTF?
#16
I had a GTM 2.5" FULL exhaust which was exactly the same: BIG drone at 1800-2200 RPM. Annoying. Too loud. Right in the sweet spot.
(I bought the ARK Grip and it killed 80% of that. Smart switch.)

I had a stillen exhaust on my 6mt and noooo drone whatsoever. But u did say u hace the 7mt.
I switched from the gen 3's i takes to r2c beciase it added more noise. The r2cs are def more audible in the cabin vs the gen 3's. U might like the gen 3's for power and less noise over the r2c's.

So my initial findings were as follows:
Car at idle: 56Db
Me talking: 70db
Normal driving: 65-72db
My exhaust under load: 85-90db
Me driving over the raised rumble strip on the side of the freeway: 91db
And this wasnt even my exhaust at its loudest. The hills were small and not steep so it didn't get a chance to really hit max drone.
By the way it's not a growl, cuz that's what I want, it's a probably 90-180hz constant drone.
If you have a 6mt and want to test this try going up a hill in too high a gear and floor it.

I have stillen CBE, I love hearing the sound that I have to roll down both windows whenever I drive locally. It does not have perfect sound and can be annoy sometime but I got used it. Recently I installed R2C, it made the sound even better especially when all the sudden rpm goes over 4k , sounds like a semi truck passing by.
I always thought the whole point of getting an aftermarket exhaust is to get lounder sound, no?

I used my iPhone. To be honest the sound might even be louder because I don't know if I trust the iPhone mic to be able to be sensitive enough to pic up sounds at such a low frequency. I've come to realize some of the problem is the trunk acts like a bass box, bouncing the low frequency sound around and making it loud and boomy. I'm going to try a bit of sound deadening first to see if I can block some of that resonance from entering the cabin. I'm totally fine with the sound if I hear the exhaust from the outside, it's just droning a lot on the inside.

I wish someone could test the Stillen exhaust against the ark and see which one drones less.

I have the Ark and it seemed to quite a bit overtime, or maybe I just got used to it. I'd give it some time for sure.
If you like the sound of the stock exhaust and just want a little more to it you could always just get some HFC, will increase the stock sound, and give you more power then replacing the full CAT anyways.
Good luck modding!

Yes. It actually almost seems to make it worse. When I pulled up all the trunk carpeting and revealed the spare tire the resonance was less. There is a specific resonance that's happening in my trunk, like a tuned port on a subwoofer. If you stand outside in the back of the car it sounds pretty good. Stick your head inside and suddenly it sounds louder and like you stuck your head inside a band pass subwoofer box playing a constant 100hz hum. I checked and adding dynamat to all the bare trunk areas (which is most of it), will add maybe 15-20lbs. That's not much when you're talking about in-car mass. Coupes have way more sound deadening than the sedans, I can tell you that. They are much quieter on the road. I had one for three years.

No I had a local muffler shop install it. I wondered the same thing myself. They said they'd check it, but told me that a leak sounds different than drone. Anyone have experience with a leak causing droning?
