Is this safe?

Hey guys, so my friend taught me a trick to make the car sound like it has intakes in without actually having one and was wondering if this was safe. He basically unclipped the filter of the intakes but still left it in there and said all its doing is letting more air in just like a real intake but still filters it. Is this safe?

sounds like he just left more air in, but the extra air is not going thru the filter itself. Alot of air still coming in and going thru the filter, but some air is actually coming in thru the extra room he made. So its as safe as air going thru the intake without the filter could be.

(this is my guess not really a car specialist here)

unless you have something holding the filters in place you risk having the filters fall away and having something sucked into your intake which would be really bad depending on what it is. my advice to you is to just get some k&n filters. our stock intakes are really good, plus the part he removed has air ducts to provide cooler air to the area. there is no need to do a half *** cheap mod to just make it sound like you spent $300-$500 when you are risking messing up your engine for it.

Honestly, a little pebble or w/e wouldn't even do much damage to your head if it were sucked up. So doing this once or twice to show off is cool and all, but the risk comes if you do it over a prolonged period of time, letting crap just build up. THEN you could really do some damage.

"Friends" (quote/unquote) always have these "great" suggestions with other peoples $40K cars. No it's not safe. The filter is there for a purpose, not filtering the air that goes in will definitely have consequences over time.

What does this "friend" drive??? And would they do this to their car, or are you the"Guinea pig"? This car is not a 1980 Chevy Chevette, you can't get away with treating it like one for long.

Your friend is a damn moron. It's letting more air in because it takes the pressure off the gasket on the air filter and as such the air can bypass the filter.

Seriously.

Someone once told me "you are judged by the company you keep."

Their idea is totally dumb, and as someone else said...people always have great ideas when it comes to other people's ****, but would most likely never do it to any of their ****.
