Exclamation K&N Typhoon Intakes

I got my sedan a little less than a month ago and I have decided that even though I didn't want to mod this car, I def. do want intakes. I have been researching on here, I came from an '08 coupe as you can see in my sig and on that car I have Injen CAI's. Drove through numerous rain storms, blizzards, never had issue with water locking and all.

However for this car I want a ram air set up as it is easier to install and easier to maintain. I have read nothing but great things about the R2C ram airs however the price is a little crazy with being in the mid $300's. Another intake I had been keeping a close eye on was the K&N typhoon. Trust their name, product seems legit and easy to install, seen numerous youtube videos and it sees nice. Mind you I am not worried about HP gains and all that, to me an intake it purely for sound purposes in giving out the WOT when I get on the car. I seem to be getting a pretty decent deal on the K&Ns price wise so I was just wondering what you guys have to say about it or recommend alternatives keeping price in mine, thanks guys..

since I got no feedback from anyone, I went ahead and got the intakes from amazon (the cheapest I could find believe it or not) and I got them within 2 days, it was awesome! Installation was good. Having previously installed an Injen CAI on my previous coupe, installing ram-airs took half the time and were half as painful. I dont feel a power difference mainly because im still breaking in the car so I have been gentle on her, the sound however is amazing! love the intakes, the fit and finish is awesome as well, K&N quality is top notch. Here's a quick pic. Would def. recommend if you dont feel like spending in the mid $300's. I got these for $290

FWIW, Stillen G3's use K&N filters. I thought about buying these intakes as well before I bought my G3's. For the SRI guys, I'm wondering if the K&N's are better than R2C without paying an additional $130+ for essentially the same type of product.

Thanks Goonz for jumping out there. I'll be placing my order tomorrow. On my G6, I had a K&N filter on my custom CAI, and it performed really well. What was your install time?

Performance is probably pretty close as it is with just about any intake, but I think the R2C is superior. Their filtration is bar far the best of any as they produce filters for government military vehicles and are dry washable media. With that said I also believe the company does their fair share of R&D. The finish looks better on the R2C, the heat deflectors completely surround three sides and seal to the hood. In all the pictures I've seen it appears the R2C is longer = further away from the engine. They also offer 3 different finishes.

Just my own opinion.

The R2C may be superior, but is it $130 superior to the K&N? Playing devil's advocate a bit here, but here me out...

Granted R2C does have some experience with filters, but I don't see them having a significant if any advantage over K&N for filter R&D. R2C's focus in their military operations is for diesel vehicles designed for use in extreme heat and dust, essentially a very different climate than what we experience in the US aside from the Southwestern US.

With that being said, I'm not fully convinced the R2C is $130 better. Honestly, I'm not even convinced my G3's are worth the $450 I paid, especially considering how much a PITA the install was.

I'm up in the air on this too. I like the R2C's but the K&N setup looks almost identical. Need more feedback on the K&N's.

Exactly the reason why I couldn't justify paying $130+ for R2Cs. Everything I researched on the boards suggested I get the R2C's but the price was just outrageous and honestly an intake to me is something that I don't expect to give massive gains, I just want the sound when I get on the car. K&N had a much better price plus the name is also well known everywhere. I had Injen CAI's on my coupe and they sucked! they were a pita to install, cleaning the filters were a pain. I never got that intake sound from the Injens. These K&N's however are awesome and the sound I get from them is simple fantastic! Wish my car was 6-mt.

Install was okay, they were ram-airs so it was less of a hassle, took me 1.5hrs in the cold (I kept running inside to warm my hands up). Directions for installation were for a 370Z. There were only 2 issues with install mainly because this product was designed and tested on a 370Z. First issue was that on the passenger side intake, the mini air hose coming off the side of the tube had to be cut in order to have it fit smoothly without any kinks (nothing big at all). Lastly when I was done with the install and went to put back the engine plastic cover, it wouldn't fit due to the 370Z and G37 covers being a lot different in size. No biggy though, just had to move the heat shields a little and force the cover on. Other than that, no issues, directions were very thorough.

Any updates from anyone that has the K&N Typhoon system (now that it's been a while)?

Do you feel any SOTP performance gains? Anyone dyno before and after? How about even using one of the performance apps on the phones (like Dynolicious) to check before and after performance?

Thanks!

Got them installed on my 09 g37s and did a dyno got a 15.3 hp bump at 4400 rpm well worth it and I've always used k&n on all my cars.
