Can anyone explain this better? why does a 3" outlet not fit a stock midpipe?

The metal tubing and flange on the y-pipe (on the side that connects with the midpipe) has a 3" diameter. The midpipe it connects to has a 2.5" diameter. I don't know much about flow rate physics, but because of the abrupt change in diameter, there will be less efficient flow (maybe due to turbulence?).

I've ran multiple Y-pipes. Look into the Soho motorsports Y. Uses a conical taper venturi collector for better flow, high quality stainless and the welds are amazing. The weld quality was much higher than my Tanabe, also at half the weight. It's priced very fair considering the quality.
The Soho pipe has ZERO rasp. Maybe this is due to not having the flex joints found in the usual Y-pipes. Drone is also very minimal.
You're not going to find a higher quality Y-pipe under 1,000$.

Read my post here: https://www.myg37.com/forums/intake-...-question.html
Last one.
Essentially for the sedan, the Y-Pipe and for the most part, the mid-pipe to the end of the resonators, are not the bottleneck on out setup.
However, after the resonators you are looking at a tapering of the 2.5 inch factory exhaust that goes down to 1.75 inch diameter at some points.
My assumption is that this was done to quiet down the cabin on the sedan.
More than likely, if you found a good set of 2.5 inch inlet mufflers, then replaced the piping after the resonators with 2.5 inch mandrel bent tubing, you would experience many of, if not all of the same exhaust note and documented performance gains of the 2.5 inch CBE systems discussed here on the forum.
The Tanabe mid is also discussed in this thread. My feeling is that this was designed for the Coupe, and that the piping diameters would not match correctly to the sedan Tanabe axleback. Note that the tubing on the Tanabe axleback appears to be identical to stock.

FYI anyone that installs a 3 inch y outlet to a 2.5 inlet is most likely have rasp. Correct me if I'm wrong, but turbulence = rasp .
I installed one on my art pipes / fujitsubo and it sounds like crap now around 3-5k rpm. So sad because the fujitsubo sounded so good (just too quiet) before I started messing with it...
I'm thinking about having the midpipe cut to match the y outlet @ 3inch, you guys think that might help or is the 3 too big and causing the gases to cool and expand which could be causing rasp?
Any suggestions? These are all the questions I'm going to ask a pro muffler shop one of these days...
