CEL for afretmarket cat`s
#16
Join the club bud...I've had my berks on for about 3 months...No issues at all...After a hard run the other night the SES light came on...I called the dealership to bring it in but I had to cancel my appt...3 days later the SES was gone...Sure enough last night I had a real hard run and up popped the SES light...
I'm going to go with Bboys thoughts and say its the AF readings...I doubt that its the 02 sensors as I just like yourself had them for 3 plus months before anything showed up...
Question for everyone (bboy)...Any concern about the code being up or do I HAVE to clear it? It's going to be bothersome to constantly do so...Instead I'm training myself to just accept the light for now...Thoughts?
PS. I dont have other issues that some are talking about...Just the SES light...

the next day it turns on again...and i drive on it for 2 weeks...and put my factory cats back in today...just to test the broke O2 sensor theory...so far no light...
and the ringing sound I mentioned in the above post has gone away...

i wish my SES would have went away....when mine turned on it lasted a week so I took it to the dealers....the dealers said it was my cats and they reset the light, and also said next time they will charge me to do all that cuz it was a mod...

So you went back to factory cats and there is no light...Meaning you probably never had any issues with the O2 sensor right? Maybe the theory of having a bit of lean A/F mixture is right...Curious as to why you went back to stock? Just to test the theory out? Or are you done with HFC's?
PS. As I mentioned mine came back on again....I'm just learning to cope with it...

i went stock just to test whether or not it was my sensors....im not done with HFCs...i just wanted to narrow the light down to the sensor or the cat....I reset the light today after i re-installed my stocks...so ill drive on it for a couple days and make sure the light doesnt come back on....
it may be the A/F issue, but from my understanding the cats throw the SES light while driving hard...and then it goes away itself...mine stayed on for weeks....so im guessing thats not the issue here...

the CEL will come on with aftermarket cat because your A/F ratio is now different. From past experience on my RSX-S, to get rid of the CEL we had to purchase a different ECU and have it tuned with the new mods. Not sure how it works for g37, but im guessing its the same problem

I disagree with this just because I have never thrown a code until I had the JWT installed which increased the AF number even more. I have had only one code thrown so far. It is not on all the time so it just seems to be hit and miss. I would recommend getting a AF measurement if you are worried. Stock I was at 11 average. After the HFCs I was just under 13 if I remember right. If you are 12 or more stock then HFCs might give you a light when driving hard. With test pipes, keep in mind that they are illegal everywhere and are easy to tell if a car has them, you will have a gas smell when stopped at lights, the SES light is always on, and they are raspy which I hate. Make sure you factor that into your decision.

I can see your point and see that seem to be very knowledgeable on this forum so I take your opion seriously, the only thingg is that I plan on putting on the magnaflow cat-back on at the same time as the HFC's so arent I just asking for codes, as well as ordering the JWT intakes too, so basicly im gonna be throwing codes regardless rightt??

CEL Light from cats
They have been on the car for a long time before i had a problem.
Dealer cleared code in ecu.
no more light all good.
Once reset you should be fine.

yeah dealer cleared mine...then it came back on 2 days later...then i cleared it...and it came back on...so after it being on for 2 weeks did i decide to go back to stock to test the sensors

The Infiniti tech that looked at the car told me something like this, the car does what is called an "A/F ratio self learning." Your car learns the normal AF values when it is new and stock. If the AF goes outside a specific range, it triggers the ecu to trip the SES. Adding the HFC's can sometimes cause it to trip immediately, but sometimes it takes a hard run on the track or freeway. All cars are different slightly with how much the AF changes with these parts. Thats why it takes a drive cycle for the sensors to realize the readings are different from the "learned" value range and signal the ECU to trip the SES. Resetting the ECU won't clear the old A/F ratio values. So he cleared what he called the "mixture ratio self-learning value" the car had and let it learn the higher flow. Allowing your electronics to learn the higher AF levels will allow them not to get out of range, even when racing. Clearing the mixture ratio self-learning value is a weird task. It can be found in the service manual for our cars, but my dealership performed it for free under warranty. It takes about 25 min. to do. This should clear up all your problems for the future. Also, intakes for our car will not trip the SES. Don't worry about this, it's not an issue.
P.S. You could have done a search on here and found all this info out, there's already been numerous posts about this topic.

The raspy noise you hear is the HFC's, Unfortunately there is no fix for this, you gotta just live with the sound.

Some of the 07+ G35 guys with HFCs are not accomplishing the sensor issue with the non-foulers like it did on the earlier G35s.... and the system is the same on the G37, so not sure how well it's going to work on them either. It's worth a shot and I'll probably go that route tho.
