Question HFCs and Oil Consumption: FACT or FICTION

I was advised by the Master Tech at my local dealer, who also happens to be an associate editor for Nissan Sport Magazine, not to add HFCs to my G37. He indicated this is a quick way to get the infamous oil consumption issue and was also a contributing cause on the G35's.

The technical reason that he stated is (i'm not that technical so i may not be quoting him properly word for word):

"With this engine the valves for the intakes and exhaust are open at the same time and close at the same time. With the HFCs any [material?] that breaks loose inside is just gonna come back up into the [engine?] and over time that will 'bore out' [something on the inside] and thats how you get your consumption."

I really love the sound we get from the HFCs and was even considering getting a GReddy or Tanabe axleback to take care of the muffler rattle and finish of my exhaust mods... but not at the cost of oil consumption problems! What do YOU guys think? Please enlighten me and others.

But what motivation would Mr. Master Tech/Associate Editor have to deceive...? I don't want it to be true but just calling it ridiculous isn't a very compelling argument

yea, we need more info. I def heard about this with the G35, just trying to sort out the fact and fiction... sorta like MYTH BUSTERS!

The tech is pretty savvyy, buncha ppl with G's down here agree and give him respect. So that's why i actually paused to reflect about this, cuz its not just any guy.

He's also the one who recomended not to change to synthetic on the VQ engine till at least 20K miles... thats something others on this board have chimed in about and agreed for the most part.

Wow, I had heard/read opinions of waiting 'til maybe 5K miles to switch to synthetic...but 20K.../you're convinced of the value of that advice...?

there was a thread awhhiilee back. some other's heard that too and agreed. there was a technical reason, but once again i am not too sure.

I'm just scared of consumption... so waiting till 20K is not gonna cause it, but if doing it early MIGHT, then i dont wanan take a chance.

I'm at 18K, about to do a semi-synthetic change, monitor my levels, and then drain that out early do another semi at 20k, monitor it and chage early, then go over to synthetic for the long haul.

I'm in the same boat. I've asked solopresident thru a PM to respond, but so far he's said only that he has no answer. I've asked his opinion as to folks at FI responding (although I suppose their bias might get in the way). I've never modded anything before and this is some controversial and expensive way to start...

By the way, any opinions on restocking fee(s) or other charges if cancelled before shipment (probably not even built yet...)?

No sweat i think, you can prolly sell it easily if u reeally dont want it on. But besides it being the weekend and ppl are all out driving, i say we wait till the work week.

It could, in fact, also be that alot of ppl don't know the answer or are trying to find out themselves

Ah, found a thread on driver in which someone is asking the same question. The first reply seems to answer it to the best of the poster's knowledge, but the thread quickly moves in a slightly diff direction.

http://g35driver.com/forums/showthre...il+consumption

I bumped it for an update. It was posted originally arouned september 2007. I see FI is viewing this thread... wut u think? lol
