K&N drop in filters

K&N drop in filters
Has anyone installed the k&n drop in replacement filters yet?
They are part no. 33-2399 which is the same filter for the 07 - 08 g35 and 350z so they shouldn't be hard to get at a local parts store.
At $100 - $120 I would be more willing to start here to see if this could let the car breath a little better. Usually with new cars the stock air box works great but the filters could be a little better flowing. I would think we could see a better increase from these than a cone intake. This is assuming with no tune obviously. Since the reason the stock boxes do so well is the way the computer works with the MAF sensor. Stock boxes don't create a "swirl" effect like the cone filters do. This usually gives incorrect readings to the MAF sensor and therefore the computer can not adjust A/F ratios to be correct. Generally your car will run rich (decreasing HP). I ran into this same problem on my Evo IX and once it was tuned the cone filter worked great but before that the drop in filter was better than the cone.
Let me know what you guys think. I may try this over the weekend. If I do I will post any findings.

Please do not waste your time or money (don't care how much you have) on drop in filters! You will not experience ANY gains whatsoever. Plenty of air gets into the engine with the stock setup. If you're going to replace your air filters around 15-20,000 miles and what to go K&N that's straight but don't expect any gains!

Thanks for the reply. I will hold off until we get a reliable tune developed for our car. I wasn't sure since I haven't done anything with this car yet and to be honest I haven't even looked at the stock filter to determine if there is room to improve the surface area. I know some cars have a lot bigger rubber edge on the filter which decreases surface area and flow. If k&n was able to increase that (like on some other cars) we could possibly see a gain.

hmmmmm...interesting reply posts considering that there are threads on driver with documented dyno runs showing that the stock box with k&n's and a ztube show hp gains (better than all aftermarket cai's)

It's the Z-Tube, not the filter, that's my opinion, the intake filter receives plenty of air from stock filter. Do as you please.

yes the Z-tube did net some gains...but not much. certainly not enough to shave any times. and that is with the DE engine...the same engine that needed a raised plenum to get gains and only had 1 TB. the HRs have a revised plenum and 2 air boxes. I think it's safe to say it's as good as it gets...
