Water on Drivers Floor under carpet floor mat :(

Hey everyone,

I just picked up a 2014 Infiniti Q60S AWD Coupe - Black on Black with 56,000 Km.

Unfortunately 7 days after purchasing it from my local Infiniti Dealer it rained once and I then gave it a touch less car wash to confirm. She’s a leaker

I read a few of the posts and watch plenty of YouTube videos.

My first hope is the dealership is going to help me out m… but I’m not holding my breath.

Second is I’m assuming and hoping it’s the sunroof plastic plug grommet behind the vent/dash that goes into the firewall - This attaches to the tube that runs up through the A pillar and attaches to the sunroof. This would be the most obvious repair after doing some research online and speaking with a few friends in the automotive industry. But again without running a simple water test and peeling back the carpet to watch the water drip I can’t know for sure… yet.

Quite possibly it’s even more simple then that maybe leaking from somewhere else like a grommet or seal. Or maybe it’s something more difficult.

I noticed it’s extremely common on G37’s, Q60’s and Q50’s to leak from that sunroof plug. If it is in fact this part, the part was quoted to me from my local Infiniti at $19.38. There are over 25 plus videos on YouTube/The internet of regular people preforming this repair in there driveway (All on G37’s and Q60’s) with basic tools and some patience popping off the interior A Piller, the vent, the side access port to the dash and using very long needle nose pliers to pull off the plug for inspection. Typically it looks like it gets “gummed” up and or the black gasket around it deteriorates prematurely.

Where the other problem lyes is the carpet itself.

When I peeled back the carpet to have a look. Not only was everything soaked to the touch. It was visibly wet both on the carpet, underneath on the metal, on the styrofoam and the white under-pad/heat barrier was completely saturated.

Also the unknown to how much damage and water is truly under that carpet and under-pad. After work today I purchased multiple dehumidifier and DampRid moisture absorber bags/packs to try and suck up some of the smell and water until I can start pulling things apart.

Best case scenario, the leak is easily found and fixed. I’m able to dry all the carpet and underpad. Shampoo the floor and possibly ozone generate for smell.

Absolute worst case is playing the chase game trying to find where it’s leaking from and mold and mildew is created from the saturated carpet causing me to replace the entire carpet and underpad.

Priced the carpet out… Jesus

@ Local Infiniti - 2 months at minimum back order if they can even get it. Parts department Believes it’s discontinued

Part # 749011NG0A

Carpet

$1,662.00 Canadian plus tax

@ Infinitipartsdeal.com

Infiniti 74901-1NG0A Carpet Assy-Floor

2009-2015 Infiniti 749011NG0A

$996.68 American plus tax, shipping & duties

@ Parts.Infinitiusa.com

Carpet Floor Part Number: 74901-1NG5A

$1,467.33 American plus tax, shipping & duties

All these prices aren’t even including the white felt under-pad underneath that’s soaked which is another few hundred American plus paying Infiniti or a body shop to install everything taking out my seats and the Center console.

I’m really hoping it doesn’t get to that and I can salvage the carpet by drying everything doing it properly.

W

ish me luck

You had the car for a week... Is there any type of warranty in play or was the purchase "As-Is?" Either way, did you also check the passenger side floorboard area? This area is the most vital to keep dry due to the electronics/ modules located in the "drip path."

On the Coupe's there are three (3) main sources for water leaking into the cabin: the sunroof drain grommets, the windshield cowl seals (check cabin air filter/blower housing for water) and the A-pillar seals. There are tons of threads on here about solutions for each. How you tackle them is up to you pending any warranty/ seller repair.

I doubt you will need to replace the carpet or padding. I don't think anyone who has tackled this issue has done such. I didn't. After I completed necessary repairs I thoroughly dried the carpet out and called it a day. No lingering odors or staining and I have the wheat/tan interior.

Keep in mind that depending on how much water leaked, there could also be some puddling on the rear floorboard as well. Due to the design of the floor pan, once water reaches a certain level it will overflow to the rear.

Good luck nailing down the source(s) of the leak and effecting repairs.

Hey,

Really appreciate the kind words. So I purchased this car right from an Infiniti dealer off there used car lot section. It came certified here in Ontario Canada. And I have some protection with OMVIC if things go sideways because it’s only been 7 days since purchase … but nothings ever a guarantee.

ive been reading on the forum for the last few days and watching videos which has been a great help.

I have only noticed on the drivers side. Been working 12 hour shifts and just haven’t had the time. Monday is my day off. I’m going to bring it to my local mechanic to get it up on the hoist check everything else out then pull apart the passenger side to check.

from a feel … passenger and both rears seemed dry.

I’ll post my progress and updates as I go along this beauty journey lol.

thanks

I tried fixing this myself (passenger side) and did it three times, no luck. Typical fix is through the sunroof, however my leak comes from the engine bay and trickles down to the feet. It gets bad and smells like sh** - we drilled 3 holes into both sides (d/p) of the frame where you lift the white foam. Still leaks, but at least the water can pass through and not sit and collect

If the car is certified why didn't you just take it to a dealer instead of letting your mechanic touch the car and drilling holes in it?

—To answer Johnny’s G:

In my case, just personally I spent a decent amount of money on this car (in my eyes) and I’m just not willing to start drilling holes.

As much as it sucks, I’ll spend the time and money somewhere to rip out the interior if I have to make sure it’s fixed and also the carpet is dried out.

Crappy these cars have this issue for sure.

— To answer Mummy 2:

So in Ontario, Canada it’s not so simple… even if the car is Certified/Safetied.

We have Omvic here (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council) which is our provinces sales regulator. Unfortunately, in this particular circumstance OMVIC can’t force or make the dealer fix the issue. It would be a matter for small claims court. (This is also coming from someone that used to sell cars and have his Omvic license).

I’m familiar with automotive law and ethics, but again they would have had to illegally safety the car and you essentially prove it or the cars engine or transmission go in the first week or two THEN Omvic would be more inclined to help push the dealer for return or repair.

For an issue like this, it’s going to come down to the integrity of the dealership to want to help. In fairness they could say they didn’t know and there may have even been truth to that. (I believe they knew but that’s besides the fact).

If they took the car in on trade no part of a safety or inspection is going to be pull up the interior carpets and or rub and feel around.

Update: Currently they have agreed to take the 7 year old used car back, give me a loaner car, and try and attempt to find/fix the issue. As well as dry out the carpets and ozone the car.

I’m fortunate I purchased this 2014 with 56,000 km right from an Infiniti dealer so they are more willing to play ball and help compared to if I bought it off a little private dealer.

If for some reason it doesn’t work out and they can’t find or fix the leak. As an absolute last resort I found a local custom Upholstery shop that does 1 of 1 hot rod interiors, regular cars, boats and RV’s. (My local mechanic and body shop both don’t want to tackle this type of job).

The upholstery shop Is willing to take out my seats, the entire carpet, under-pad and center console. Find the leak, replace the under-pad, dry out the factory carpet with a dehumidifier and reassemble for $1,300-$1,500. This will not only fix the leak but insure the carpet is mold and mildew free with no smells in the future.

But … cross my fingers and wish me luck with the dealer that they not only find it, but do a good job and dry out my carpets.

Cheers

I'm sure the dealer will take care of it. And if it happens again out of warranty I've found that the Arm & Hammer bags work better than Damprid as far as odor neutralizing. I hang the bags behind my seat during the summer time to help with musty ac smells. And long grain white rice is best for drying the carpet. Just buy a few big bags and pour it everywhere after you get up as much water as you can with paper towels and take the foam out. Put it under the floor mat too. After a couple days vacuum it up and everything should be almost bone dry. Then take some disinfectant spray and spray it everywhere to prevent mold and mildew. Let it dry and put everything back together and you're good to go.

Thanks Mummy2!

Appreciate the advice! I’ll post the results once I get the car back from the dealer.

So the update right now is the dealer still has my car. Sunroof was out of alignment. That got fixed.

Then they called in a company called LeakPro here in Ontario. They verified that the alignment is no longer an issue, they also verified that the driver and passenger sunroof drain plugs into the firewall are leak free.

Leakpro determined it to be a bad seal on the windshield.

Dealer is now calling in there own windshield guys to verify and fix the issues and hoping to have the car back next week sometime hopefully.

I also got them to agree to remove the seats and carpet to dry up everything.

For now I have a rental on them and will see what happens when I pick up the car. Either way I am going to take it to a windshield leak specialist after and pay for them to run a test to make sure the leak is fixed since all this is being covered.

Will update more when I know

Im having the same issue, rain leaking and accumulating under driver side carpet front/back. What drill bit did you use to poke a few holes where the water is accumulating? Did you have to remove front seat in order to lift carpet? Tried to find a video tutorial of how to lift carpet but didnt find one. Thanks for any advice!

The carpet hooks onto these plastic hooks that are under the plastic covers that run along the side of the car. I had this same problem where I had water leaking into my car on the passenger side but to remove the plastic covers and unhook the carpet from the plastic hooks under the plastic covers is done in the exact same way as the driver side. Just locate the plastic panels that cover the carpet and rip them out to access where the carpet hooks onto the plastic hooks. It will take some force to take out the plastic panels but it is relatively easy. Lmk if u have anymore questions.
