i use Wix in the larger size (for the M56). i see no value (for me) in spending more on the fancy "performance" filters. Wix make very high quality filters (no cardboard) and are the suppliers for many other labels. i also use Wix for cabin and air filters. great product, great price point.

Purolator PureONE w/ Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 here.
I saw a thread a while back where someone dismantled and compared various brands of filters (including the OEM filter). I'll try to dig up the link.

What is the benefit of having a bigger filter ? would it need a bit more oil as well ?

The benefit of a larger filter is a matter of debate yet many of us do it anyway. I think the majority of us here that use larger filters believe that more oil can be filtered through a larger filter and possibly better cooling of the oil. The OEM sized filter is also exceptionally small for a 6 cylinder engine compared to OEM filters of a 4 cylinder. The size difference is not that huge from what people have recommended here about 1/3 larger than stock G37 filter.
Does it require more oil yes, about .2-.4 qts more.

A greater surface area of filtration will filter more effectively and won't be prone to flow restriction over long OCIs. It may not be much of a difference but like mentioned above, our OEM filter is very small for a higher output motor and anyting to maximize oil flow is a step in the right direction. I've always used the bigger filters available for almost all my vehicles and in 35 years have never had an oil related problem or oil consumption issue.

To sum up whats been already said. If you're using regular oil, stick with any good brand oil filter like Amsoil, Bosch, Purolator, OEM, etc.. If you're going synthetic use a name brand, extended life filter like: Mobil-1, Fram Ultra Synthetic (with "XG" in the part#), K&N, Royal Purple, etc.. K&N has a 17mm nut on the filter to allow quick removal with a socket, and they all are engineered to go up to 15,000 miles with 99% or better filtration efficiency. Just be sure to order the larger QX56 filter. Good luck.

As i'm with stillen oil cooler, factory filter doesn't work anymore, So had to use bigger diameter filters ..
For a reference, these are some examples that work with Stillen oil cooler:
Purolator PureOne PL10193
Purolator PureOne L10193
Fram XG3950 ( plz don't use Fram PH3950 that comes with stillen oil cooler, better to use the XG instead ).
Fram TG3950.
Wix 51381.
Just loved to share and help those with Stillen oil coolers as i had a bad time searching for these, finding out what works with my Stillen's .
