Larger Oil Filter

I'm currently using Pennzoil Ultra and PureOne Filter (PL14612). I'm planning to change the filter to PL14610 which is a about 1/2 an inch longer. Same thread size and diameter. Is there anything wrong with this? I figured I would get more surface area to filter the oil.

No problem at all. Any filter that fits a Nissan will likely work. I have used filters specified for my '96 Maxima and and they work just fine. They are slightly bigger than the G37 application but i used it because I already had several of them on hand and it saved me a trip to the auto parts store. So long as the filter seats properly on the mating flange you are all good. It would have to be pretty fat to not fit.

Bing-o. If you just want to plug in a vehicle and have the added length, but all of the other dimensions be precisely the same? Look no further than the QX56's filters!

If you take it to the dealer for any warranty work (engine comparment) change it out for the correct size. They can be jerks and tell you your not using correct equipment, which could give you headaches down the road.

I use that one, it's technically a Nissan Maxima filter.
6 Oil and filters changes so far, no issues.

You will need to get the 5.23 QT jug of oil now to keep the level up.

Absolutely 100% false. If the oil filter fits properly and is of equivalent quality as OEM, you will not have any such warranty headaches. Not to mention that they will not know the difference by looking at it unless it is a whole lot larger.

Thanks for the replies. I doubt the dealer will give me trouble. Anyone notice any improvement in UOA results?

I didn't. Not a lot of us have done regular UOA.

I've switched between M1-108 and M1-110 depending on what's available and have done a UOA on every change. All results have pretty much turned out the same way - good.

This is over a range of 41k miles. I'm scheduled to do another UOA/oil change in a month.

I've never looked at it as a filter-quality issue... just because more surface area of filtering media is available doesn't mean it becomes any more efficient. 1sq/in of 99.9% efficient media will be just as efficient as 2sq/in of 99.9% efficient media.

Now, when you're talking about flow rates and pressure, that's where the larger filters can provide an improvement.

First oil change today on a 2012 37XS coupe. (Not a newbie btw. Doin' oil changes for 40 years...)

I conveniently used the access panel in the belly pan to get the filter off. The oil pan plug is not covered by the pan, so I didn't have to remove the entire pan.

Tonight, I noticed a tiny oil puddle underneath the car on the garage floor. I slid a piece of cardboard underneath, where it sat for 3 hours. Just checked it...bone dry.

Is it possible that some oil got trapped on the belly pan and it's dripping through? Anyone ever experience this? I'll look at it tomorrow to see exactly what the source is.

It's probably residual oil left over when you removed the filter. If you don't get in there and wipe it good, it'll drip down later.

This.

I hate the setup near the filter.....oddly enough the best success Ive had with "keeping it clean" was aluminum foil turned into a "ramp" to get the oil coming down from the filter into my oil catch pan. I basically wrapped it over the top of the sway bar and "ramped" it down thru the access cover opening right into my catch pan.

I never would have thought aluminum foil would be the best way to do it, but it really did work well. I know there are formable funnels out there but I couldnt find one locally and didnt really feel like waiting for one to be shipped so I could change my oil.

I miss the oil filter changes on my Taco, had a nice big swell/lip that you just wiped out quick and easy, no fuss or muss!
