Engine Air Filter Interval

Engine Air Filter Interval
The normal interval listed in the SMG book is 30K miles with only the Premiun service calling for a change at 15K. I felt 30K was too long so changed it myself this weekend at 15K. Here's what it looks like beside the new one:
I don't think it would have lasted until 30K. I don't drive on dusty roads but the winter salt/sand treatment in NE likely has an impact.

good call on changing those. yeah the schedule is built off of "normal" driving conditions which doesn't take dirt/dust/salt/etc into account.
you should upgrade to some high quality drop ins, stop using the OEM paper filters

Can you give a couple examples of high quality dropins?

it's amazing what the search button can yield isn't it

There's also K&N drop in's, but the HKS are non oiled and you can just wash them when you need to clean them. I have the Stillen Gen3 CAI so I haven't used either but if I was going to get a drop in replacement it'd be the HKS

That looks horrible. I inspect mine every few thousand miles. At about 5K I blow the dust and debris out of it with compressed air and flip it around (notice how the dirt is concentrated on one side) so the cleaner side is where the dirtier side was. At 10K I change them because they are thoroughly dirty. It may be a few more or less miles depending on how dusty it is where you live, but the 30K change interval is obviously not often enough. By the looks of yours, 15K isn't either.

You can't flip it around that way (reversing direction of air flow) because the filter won't fit in the housing that way. I mean flip the top edge toward the bottom of the housing so that the bulk of the air flow goes through the cleaner side rather than the dirty spot as shown in the photo above.

I think I'll start flipping it every 5K and may start replacing every 10K.
BTW - these OEM filters are lightly oiled media. I prefer these to aftermarket.

For me, after studying the pros and cons of dry vs. oiled, I've decided to DIY yearly engine air filter changes with Wix dry paper filters.
Then again, I don't race my car at the track, and I drive in the city mostly.

Just replaced my Injen CAI filters recently after about 10k miles, I think. Looks way over due.
