Coming up on 800 miles - should i change the oil

Hello,

I am coming up on 800 miles on my 09 AWD 7AT. I have seen a number of people on this site talk about doing oil changes at around this marker. I have also read on other sites (non-Infiniti) about how people always recommend an oil change at this point for any car.

But, in reading the manual, it says that the oil does not need to be changed prior to the first recommended change interval. Page 9-6 (and onto 9-7).

"Change intervals-- Your engine was filled with a high quality engine oil when it was built. You do not have to change the oil before the first recommended change interval. Oil and filter change intervals depend upon how you use your vehicle. Operation under the following conditions may require more frequent oil and filter changes."

This would mean not doing an oil change until 3750 or 7500 depending on schedule.

So, should I change my oil this weekend or not? Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Charlie.

You don't have to, but some people like to do it around the first 1200 miles. I just did my first one at 3750 then again at 7500. After that I now go about 5000 miles before changing.

You can wait to 3,750 with no problems. I chose to do it earlier because I know the oil has been in my car for months before I purchased it so I wanted to change out the old oil.

Interesting point on the oil being old. I purchased my car new off the lot this Feb, but it was an 09. The oil is probably old. Does oil standing in an engine go bad?

I am leaning on doing it soon, but was just wondering about this subject. It is $60 and an hour of my time to do it. No big deal (though finding the time is tricky). Lots of people swear by the early oil change on lots of different cars. This is not a normal car so I was just wondering if people felt it was "special" enough to break this rule of thumb.

I'm in the same boat. My 09 sat on the lot since Nov or Dec and I bought it in Feb. Plus, I'd like to make the switch to ester.

There's no need to switch to ester unless you have the vvel tick. otherwise your wasting money.

is the vvel tick the sound that occurs when your car is at idle and it makes little ticking sounds? should i change to ester if I am experiencing that sound?

i did some research. I started with calling the service department of my dealer. they said that there was no need. they said that some people like to do it at 2K, but said that we did not need to. I then called a service department in Houston. They said the same thing. Finally went with the infiniti consumer number. they said the recommended is all that was needed.

Interesting i asked each about the use of the ester oil. the consumer number people said go with the recommended but said that using other types was fine as long as it matched the ratings in the manual. she quoted them. one of the dealers said they use a syn every time. the other said that they also use a syn except in cases where the car needed something more. he said some gs met that requirement.

I'm not sure what that sound is, but on my 09 sedan, I can hear the vvel tick at start-up for about 10 seconds or so. It's pretty loud so if you have it, you'd definitely know.
