Bump for Redline. Just threw some in today; paired it with a K&N filter. Will do a UOA in time

I've started a thread in the Engine, Drivetrain & Forced Induction forum on Ultra, compiling a chart of all 6 Ultra UOAs reported to date on BITOG.

Looking forward to adding yours to the list!

Pennzoil Platinum is awesome stuff. I just got my UOA back and he said my oil has done fantastic so far. I submitted it at around 5000 miles. They say I should easily get 7500 miles out of it, so I will go until then and perhaps submit another UOA then. I'll post a scan of my letter later.

That 3500 mile Redline UOA is good. Not "great." There are many equally good VQ37 UOAs floating around. In fact, a 3200 mile Syntec UOA kicks that Redline UOA's butt. As does a 5050 mile Platinum UOA.

^ Huge differences in comparing them. How many miles were on the cars?

Im sure I could find a dealer dino UOA on a properly broken in engine with 30,000 miles that would look cleaner than the most expensive synthetic used for breaking in the car. Would I dare say that that cheap dealer dino oil provides better protection than a high end synthetic? Heck no.

That 5050 platinum UOA you are talking about is on a car thats already broken in with 30,000 miles. At that point, there should be NO break in metals. And you are comparing that to a Redline UOA done at 9k miles, when the car is still being broken in and SHOULD be expected to show wear metals?

The only thing you could compare is how the oil shears. But comparing wear metals on a broken in car vs a car thats still being broken in is silly.

Point taken. The Redline UOA the oil was run from 5500 to 9000 miles.

Here's a UOA where the guy ran Castrol Syntec 5W-30 from 8500 miles to 11,664 miles (3164 - he reports 3000), and from 11,664 miles to 14,864 miles (3200). Both of them are far better on wear metals than the Redline UOA.

I stand by my original statement. That Redline UOA with 16ppm Fe and 18ppm Cu is good not great.

I wasnt disagreeing with your first half of your original statement. But that amount of wear metals is also expected in the first 10k miles. Its normal. You will rarely ever get a "great" UOA when you are breaking in a car. In the first 10k miles, its expected to show wear and its perfectly normal..... however, considering other UOA's Ive seen from other high end synthetics in cars that are broken in, personally I think those numbers are pretty great for a car which is being broken in. Check through the blackstone thread ot BITOG or the 370z forums. Im sure you can find a UOA from a broken in car with 20-30k miles on it which has PPMs in the 50-60s. So under 20 for a car right in the middle of its break in is pretty darn good. (I think when I changed my oil at 7300 miles with the Nissan Ester Oil, my Iron PPM was in the 90s and Id be thrilled if my next UOA shows it jumped down to the high teens.)

And again my point still holds true....... You are more likely to see wear metals earlier in the life of the car...... you just took your comparison from a 30k car to a 15k car. Compare UOA history from the same driver on the same car over the life of the car. The highest wear metals are usually in the first 10k miles. Then it USUALLY drops down from 10 to 15k, and if the car is broken in properly, you can usually see your first "clean bill of health" between 15 and 30k miles.

And UOA's will vary from driver to driver.

Who's to say one driver didnt drive his car very very hard vs. the other driver did 90% highway driving. Thats why people usually post, or if they dont post someone asks about what type of driving they did etc. And judging by his signature which has 2 dyno pulls in it, Im guessing he probably drives a little more spirited.

Which is why people typically look over a range of data when comparing oils because there are so many variables that can come into play when comparing one single UOA vs another single UOA.

But, if you must compare, then compare over the same lifespan. Compare the Redline UOA at 9k miles to the UOA you posted at 8.5k miles.

Redline over 3500 miles changed at 9k was 16 Iron, 18 copper, 2 lead, and the UOA you posted which had 3000 miles changed at 8.5K had 22 Iron, 20 Copper, and 3 Lead...... but based on the specs (Moly, Calcium, and lower Flashpoint), Im guessing that he wasnt using Syntec then and was probably using something else.

And if you look at that car's history, wear metals were cut significantly from 8500 miles to 14k.

(And just for the record, Im not against Syntec or Pennzoil Plat. I think they are both great oils and Platinum has shown very good results in the G37 and is one of the better budget oils for this car..... but because there are so many variables in any 1 given UOA from driver to driver and car to car that picking random ones and comparing them to each other doesnt show you that one is better than the other.......... now if you can get 5 UOAs over the same period of time and compare them to each other and still see a significant difference, then I would agree with the analysis....)

Which one would you go for between Redline and Motul 8100 X-Max. If they are the same price?

Thanks

Had my first "free" oil change at 3750 miles and put in Nissan ester oil. If the manual recommends the Ester oil, which it does, then why was I charged for it?????? Service mgr. told me once you use Ester you should continue to use it in future oil changes. Agree???

allagaroo,

Read this entire thread.

Then read this thread:

https://www.myg37.com/forums/engine-...s-reports.html

Then search on here for "ester", and read those 10 threads.

Hopefully that should answer your questions. And you shouldnt have been charged anything for your first oil change no matter what oil they put in the car.

Please add mine if you would like. This oil was driven 90% city (Dallas) and has reached 120+ MPH 2-3 times and 100+ 10-12 times. Rear tires worn more than fronts. The car is started on average 3 times a day.
