The DEFINITIVE oil thread
#286
11k miles to be exact (if you are referring to me)... I plan to change it in 3750 miles (I don't know what they used for the 15k service, probably ester oil).. I am going to go with Mobile 1 5w30 synthetic. I have used that on an M3, sl55, sl600, and a few z06 corvettes without any issue.
I will do the first change at around 7200 miles.. and send it out and see how it is.. and go from there.
thoughts?

However, since you seem new to the boards, I would advise you to take a look at a few UOAs here on Mobil 1 vs other synthetics. Although Mobil 1 is better than the Ester Oil or any regular oil, there are other synthetics where based on UOAs seem to respond better to this car. Some synthetics with higher ester content, different additive packages and higher flashpoints seem to work better in this engine.
I used Mobil 1 in past vehicles also, but after looking over the UOAs, it seemed there were other synthetics which worked better in this car.
Do a search and decide for yourself, but me, shadowman, mike, jonfromcb, black betty, and a few other posters have been involved in some good oil discussions. Definately make sure you read the Blackstone Labs thread.
I think KLB even posted a few Mobil 1 UOAs and I think he was switching to Pennzoil...... although I could be wrong.

Whenever you change the oil, send it in for a UOA and see how much wear metals are in it. If its all clean after 3750 miles of driving, then go for 7200 with the Mobil 1.

or any others would be good too.
thanks for the help

try Penzoil ULTRA not platinum. I've seen some good numbers from Ultra, and Royal Purple is also a good one.

thanks for that... so if I go with the pennz. ultra.. we need 6 qrts in order to fill up the g37 right.. well 5 and a 1/4.. so would I buy the jug and then just buy 1 quart separate?
#293
Sure. It technically holds 5 and 1/8. Fill it up with 5 qt jug, check the dipstick, see if it needs more.

^ I echo what CougarRed posted.
VOA's for comparison: I added a few to cougarred's list
https://www.myg37.com/forums/engine-...-analyses.html
My thoughts on a few:
Eneos: BB and UCLABruin in their thread posted a few good UOA's with Eneos. It looks promising. UCLA bruin is sending in a sample for a VOA and a UOA, and pending that outcome, that might be my next oil.
Ultra: Its relatively new, but the specs look good. I havent seen a UOA on it from anyone on here yet, but considering its specs and people have had good results with Platinum, its a good choice.
Platinum: Reliable, seems many people on here use it with good results.
Mobil 1: Mixed results. I think a lot of the people who choose it have gone to it because its been their go-to oil in past cars. I used it in my past cars also and if I didnt know any better, I probably would have jumped on it. Its a mixed bag of results. KLB had mobil 1 in for awhile and switched to Ultra I believe, so Im looking forward to his UOA to see if his wear metals decreased with Ultra.
Redline: Costs a ton, but check out the additives in it. My car only had 8k miles on it after 2 oil changes with the Nissan Ester Oil and since it was still in the break in period, I wanted to switch to a synthetic that had a similar additive package as the Nissan Ester Oil. Check out the VOAs, Redline IMO was the closest to the Nissan Ester Oil and Redline has a good amount of ester in it. So to finish break-in for my car, Im going with Redline. I just put in my first 5 quarts at 8k, will probably change the oil again at 14k, and at my 20k oil change Im hoping to switch to Eneos or Ultra or a cheaper synthetic that has a few good UOA's pop up. However, due to Redlines additive package, it has not been API certified.
Amsoil: See Redline about API certification. And I posted some good info on why Redline and Amsoil dont want to be certified because they dont want to dilute their additive package.
German Castrol (Syntec): Is a cult oil for some guys at BITOG. Looks great on UOAs and for the price, its money.
Schaeffers 7000: Good VOA's, good additive packages, but since its not mainstream, not many UOAs of it.
Motul 300V: Holy moly! Other than Redline and Schaeffers, the only oil to have a high moly content like the Nissan Ester oil.
I think I'd use any of these before Mobil 1 in this engine.
If you dont like spending 50 bucks on an oil change for Redline or 42 for Eneos, or 35-40 for Schaeffers 7000, then Ultra for 23 would be a good choice.
Although since you said you have 3750 miles to go before your Oil change, you might be able to see a few UOA's for Ultra or UCLA Bruins VOA and UOA for Eneos come back in a week or two. And all the people who put in Ultra over the past few months are coming up due for oil changes so hopefully we can see some UOAs on Ultra.
Those UOAs and VOA might be pretty informational, so I'd put my decision on hold if possible.

Here's an UOA from an Audi 1.8 Turbo, an engine notoriously hard on oil.
The December 2009 oil was German Castrol 0W-30. The January 2010 oil was Castrol Edge 5W-30. Despite different additive packages, note the wear metals are nearly identical. German Castrol remained more viscous, but the thinner Edge was still in grade and and the driver reported 2 MPG better gas mileage with Edge.
After 5K miles, both had plenty of TBN left for a 7500 interval. GC looks like it could go 10K in this Audi.
When not on sale, GC is more expensive than Edge but less expensive than Eneos.
In the future, I plan on running several 4K mile UOAs in my car to see which oil looks best for a 7K run later. I'll be testing
Eneos
Syntec Blend
Platinum
Schaeffers 7000
Ultra
Q Horsepower
Edge

I think the 0w30 GC is fine. Depending on who you talk to on BITOG, there are some guys who put in 5w30 in the summer, and then 0w30 in the winter.
0w30 is a bit thinner at startup, and then a tad thicker at operating temperatures compared to 5w30.

I'll be changing my oil this weekend and sending in my Ultra for analysis next week. I'm at a little over 6K miles on it. We'll see in a week or so how it held up.
I'll be putting in Ultra again this time as well. The results of the UOA will determine whether I stick with it after that.
