Stolen 2013 G37x - FYI and HOW!?

My 2013 G37x was STOLEN 2 weeks ago. They did not seem to have the FOB, or a copied version - a witness saw them brake in through the moonroof, and then somehow hacked the FOB port, or hot-wired it...
He said they seemed to be waving around a lit screen; a phone or tablet. May or may not be related.

F'ckers, I LOVED THAT CAR!!!

ANY IDEAS HOW THEY DID THAT???

PS:
My preference would be to try to keep the conversation here about HOW did they do it, and how to prevent another theft. (But it's a free country & forum!)
:-)

Just in case anyone is tempted - Don't hate on the witness for not stopping them; he did call the police, they just arrived late. It's in a city, and he has a wife & baby in the house... And he sought me out, and spoke w/ the police, etc. He's a good dude.

Skip to 3:30. That's how they stole your car and mine.

I bought this after mine was stolen. Lucky I had GPS and recovered it the next day about 25 miles away. My dashcam showed 3 guys getting out a G37 coupe sport around 2 in the morning. If I can post the Dropbox link I'll post it up.

It wouldn't let me post 2 Amazon links in the same post but I also bought this.

Here's the Dropbox links. Don't know if they will work for y'all or not though.

Tricky *****'s!!!

Thanks a lot, Mummy!!! I can't wait to dig into all of that. I'm working now, but will have a close look later today.

What cars are vulnerable like that?
I'm looking to get a 2019+ Q50 - will I need to take those same precautions?

Hey Mummy, Lol, Scotty Kilmer - that guy's GREAT! What a character.
  1. What kinds of "GPS" do you have to track your car?
  2. You reckon the thieves used a locksmith-type device to program a blank key fob to work with our cars, eh? Wow, it's really that easy?!?!?!?!
    1. For all cars - or are G37's / Infinitis easiest for some reason?
  3. I'm looking at used Audi S4's now. I wonder if they are vulnerable too...
  4. The Faraday box wouldn't help in that case - that's to prevent someone from scanning for & then copying the signal coming out of the key FOB, right?
  5. That steering wheel lock - better than nothing, but could be cut with bolt cutters, correct? Or a battery powered grinder.
  6. I guess The Club would be one step harder to overcome; although cumbersome to have in the car when not in use...

Thanks again, and good luck!

1. Viper SmartStart
2. Yup. You can see it in the guys hand in the Dropbox link. I assume any car that uses a fob like ours is vulnerable.
3. Heard horror stories about Audi V8's, especially if the timing belt breaks
4. It couldn't hurt to have the box as extra protection. Plenty of videos on Youtube of Dodge Chargers being stolen this way.
5. I guess but how many thieves walk around with those?
6. That's why I like the steering wheel lock. It's not cumbersome. But thieves could just cut the steering wheel if you use The Club

Thanks again Mummy!! Helpful info.

Yeah, Audis will alwasy be more maintenance, that's for sure... & definitely a risk for catastrophic failures. the S$'s 3.0T engine (V6) is supposedly one of the most reliable. Fingers crossed!

So they can be stolen even if they have a remote start system? Whole reason why i installed it.

I just have the Fortin remote start installed with the Viper Smartstart, with gps, allowing me to use my phone to start my car from anywhere. So I just have the factory alarm. They picked the lock and unlocked the door without my alarm going off. Don't know if having the Viper security system would have prevented my car from being stolen or not.

yeah I have the whole viper system, minus tracker. When u press brake, shuts off. Or if key fob isn't introduced after the starter was used, it shuts off.
