Are AFE dry filters worth it?
#16
I do not have the dry filters, but I have the Afe Magnum Flow Pro 5R oiled filters; Purchased them after being very disappointed with the K&N drop ins (Shoddy fitment, very difficult to get in and out of the filter housings, no noticeable improvements in throttle response or power). The Afe filters fit perfectly, and my first drive after installing them I immediately noticed an improvement, albeit a slight one in throttle response and torque, not sure about overall hp. I paired them with HPS post-maf tubes, and when accelerating from a stop, there is a pretty audible wooshing noise once the engine really starts sucking in air. To my knowledge, the construction of the dry filters is virtually the same minus the oil, so I think you'll be happy with them. Stay away from K&N.

If you are looking for a different reusable filter there is Blitz SUS filters, and funny enough R2C makes the black hex OEM air box filters (PF10544). And yes, R2C is still in business. There is also the Nismo VQ37VHR filters, but they are really expensive for a non-reusable filter. I was wrong and thought they could be reused like the aftermarket ones, but Nissan recommends replacing them every 12,000 miles They are: A6546-1EA00. They do have a nice construction to them.

I have not used them yet, they showed up a few days ago. Going to install them this weekend, fitment hopefully will be spot on. I will let you know how they are. If you like the OEM filters, these flow a little more air and probably can be used past the change interval provided they are cleaned. These came in a box with Blitz tapped off, I would not be surprised if Blitz makes the Nismo filters.
This is what they look like, 2x per box:

I'm sorry but I'm not buying a product that specifically puts the word SUS in the title.... LOL On a serious note those r2c filters look like a good option for the stock airboxes.

lol, yeah it is a really silly name. For the VQ37VHR it is WN-227B for the: "Blitz SUS Power LM" filters.
Yeah R2C makes nice filters, that is for sure.

I got them from an eBay merchant: Trust Kikaku. They are a nice seller as I was able to get some very difficult to find parts from them over the years. They sell a lot of Skyline parts. If you search that part number on ebay, you will find merchants selling them. Though some are very overpriced.

This is on mobile, but in the Nismo catalog, it is page 67-68 for the filters. Might be another page on desktop.

Yes will do!

I'm sure you are joking. Being that these filters are Japanese made they are assigned words that do not translate very well to English just because it's a trending word doesnt mean that SUS abbreviations that have been that for decades now need to be subjected to the "Among us" mentality
On another note, back in 2010 in my Infiniti days I would notice differences in filter membrane color. I would always see everyonce in a while parts dept giving us filters with this exact membrane color. It would stand out from the regular however in all of the packaging there was never a mention of Nismo anywhere. These were to my belief standard filters and was convinced this was a superceeded issue.
Fast forward 8+ years I do believe this theory might hold some water. I have two best friends who are Nissan Master techs and both praised this specific filter because of the color.
On one of their rides (08 G37 with a single Tomei) making 320whp on stock unmolested boxes with these filters which was a bit crazy for me.
It convinced me that the OEM boxes have a ton of potential however looking at it now I believe it's more related to these filters which I believe is best filtering + best airflow allowing filter available for the OEM boxes.
Similar to other membranes however unlike many others these ones should do a better job at filtering debris.

Yes, I was joking!! lol Just some of my zoomer humor... That's pretty cool to see someone make 320 with the stock airboxes. I am having a hard time going with long tube intakes for this reason. I am going to take a look at these NISMO filters for my next set maybe.

They flow pretty well and their fresh air feed can be enlarged for more power.
Admin tuning made 350whp on his wife 3.7 Q50 on stock airboxes. Granted the boxes and how they feed air is different that the G37 however the standard difference is more air entering the box.

The real OEM filters of the VQ37VHR use a orange paper media for filtering. Nissan has them lightly oiled which helps catch more debris. It is a well designed filter. The Nismo ones use either the same or similar orange paper media for filtering. But the Nismo ones are different, the outer sealing shell and frame are of a completely different construction. The thing with the Nismo ones is they have a much more stiff and rigid frame, it appears to be some sort of poly / rubber frame. The Nismo ones are dry unlike the OEM ones. And yes the OEM air intake system is actually well designed. It pulls in air from the sides of the radiator shroud, whereas a lot of the short ram intakes pull in air behind it. This is not to say they are bad, but the cold air intakes that seem to perform best are the ones that go right up against the grille.

To an extent. This is because of the stigma of oem air components, folks clearly think it's trash and go tubular but if you look at many sports/race cars they all share similar construction.
A huge box containing a square/rectangle filter in the middle of a box with a tapered rear and a decent sized front entry.
I mention the 3.7 Q50 because this chassis suffers from a complicated front end and tubular intakes just bend too much and in doing so just dont make the noticeable power that you'd expect for $600.
I've seen in the 370z forums of track dedicated Zs with tubular front ends rocking the OEM boxes with a huge pipe feeding them from the front.
In reality no one (but me and possibly few others) will cut open the radiator support to NOT put tubular intakes. I did so to prepare for tubular 3 in however changed directions after.
I'm currently using modified 3.7 Q50 boxes fed by a 3.8 inch pipe from in front of the grill and can say I did not notice any losses in power from my modified G37 boxes + AFE. My AFRs are a bit leaner which means I'm seeing more air. Race comparisons I pull hard on 3.7s with intakes Z, Gs Q50s as well.
A tubular intake will only be efficient at high RPMs and this is in 3 inch form. I'm confident the airbox mod + piping + drop in filter can outperform a 2.5 inch tubular intake.
If there was the ability to make the box 3in on the outlet, I'm willing to bet that it would leave the 2.5 in the dust and would make power closer to it.
