Cylinder 3 Misfire/loss of compression
All, need your input on an issue for 2012 G37 w/168K miles. I have maintained this car well. 3 weeks ago, got a Catalytic Converter/O2 Sensor Code (forget what number that was). Than a week later, get random misfire and Cylinder 3 Misfire code, engine shakes, knocks and hesitates. I call a mobile master mechanic. He determines that its the coil, puts in a new coil, and encountering same issue, does a compression test. He says that Cylinder 3 has less than 50 lbs of compression. His opinion and advice was: cylinder has gone bad, and it will cost $3K to fix, and that i should dump the car.
Need your advice on if anyone has had this issue and what to do here. Had this car for 6 years. Sad to see it go. Thanks for your help.

you should ask another mechanic to check. If he's a parts-charger-type mechanic, he's not fully taking his time to diagnosising the car. He could have confirmed the coil pack but swapping it instead of just buying a new one.
granted, for compression, there's not many ways to do it wrong. did he check the other cylinders also?
