Step on brake light

While waiting for starter I noticed that the step on brake light was no longer lightimg up when I get in the car. The loud single click is still there just an additional sign that I hope someone ca suvgest anthing else that I should check before or when the starter comes in.

@BIL , Are you able to verify if the "click" is definitely coming from the starter/ solenoid? If so, did you try cleaning the wiring/ ring terminals at the starter? There have been reports in the past of these cars building up excess carbon deposits/ corrosion on the starter/solenoid wiring connections causing a "click/no crank" condition.

Something to consider before replacing the entire unit.

Edited to add: Also make sure your brake, ASCD, and clutch (if applicable) switches are good.

Thanks to all.

Will be getting to it this weekend hopefully. Will let you know what happens. It would be nice if it only needs a clean up.

Make sure you check the brake light switch. This is under the pedal and indicates you have the brake pressed down to allow the car to start. If the "step on brake" is not showing or not going away this could be the culprit. It is inexpensive and 5 minutes to replace.

Fixed

Happy to say $87 starter from Amazon did the trick. Up and running. That is a real pain to replace. In checking things while my son replaced the starter I noticed that a battery replacement would be rediculously difficult too. Thanks to all for your help.

Glad you are up and running. Be interesting to know if the old starter was indeed the issue or wiring.

Changing the battery is not as difficult as it looks... pop a few clips, remove the cowl, and presto.

Either way, happy motoring!
