Weird Car Humming Noise when driving 60-80mph?
Hey everyone,
This is my first post on the forum but I’ve been keeping up for a few weeks now.
I’ve had my G for about a month now, and it’s been a great car. However, I’ve noticed that when I drive on the freeway or >40mph it starts to make a humming noise in the rear. The faster I go the louder it seems to get, and swerving right causes the humming noise to become more frequent, and when I swerve left it decreases in frequency. On top of this, the steering wheel vibrates/shakes around these same speeds, noticeable mostly on the freeway. When I go >80mph the loud hum essentially disappears before coming back as I slow down.
I thought it was a rear wheel bearing problem so I went and ordered one online (which I can still return incase of anything). The problem is, when I jacked up the car to test if either rear wheel gave any pull, I got none. Even spinning the rear wheels didn’t cause anything as far as I could tell, or revving it while held up.
At this point, I’m confused at to what it could be. If you guys have any ideas or solutions that would be greatly appreciated

It’s RWD. The rear wheels also have slotted and drilled rotors whereas the front ones aren’t, I’m not sure if that has any effect on it.
How did you figure out it was the driveshaft on your Camaro?

It was a known issue. Something about steel driveshaft imbalance. Replacing it with an aluminum helped somewhat. Shifted the vibes to ~80mph and wasn't as intense.
Re wheel bearings, you may not feel the looseness just by tugging at the wheel at 12/6 or 3/9. Our honda had a bad wheel bearing. Would sound like a plane going down the road. However, the wheels were tight as can be, no play detected.
Get your car properly inspected on a rack, there may be something else that's loose.
