Wheel bearing or other?
Hi all,
Question... are there any other bearings in the front end of the AWD G's than the wheel bearings that sound/act like a failing wheel bearing?
I'm asking because it sounds like I have a failing front left wheel bearing - gets louder when I steer to the right, which loads the left bearing. I've ruled out tire noise by swapping them around.
What makes me wonder about an other possible bearing is because I changed that front left bearing/hub about 25k miles ago (Timken).
So before I go and change it again, I want to make sure I'm not overlooking a other possibilities like a carrier bearing. Made this mistake years ago on a Mazda.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi. The sound could be coming from an axle or the front differential. Also, there are small rectangular splash guards inside the wheel wells that can rub on the axle boots if they aren't secured properly.

Sounds I've diagnosed on my G.
CV axle = sounds like marbles in a can while turning at low speed.
front differential = grinding noise at low (or high) speeds that does not change when turning.
Wheel bearing = humming noise that gets worse on one side when turning. May only hear this at higher speeds if the bearing is just starting to go.
Dust shield rubbing on rotor = metal on metal scraping noise that goes away at higher speeds
belt wear/tensioner pulley = high pitched squealing noise that only happens under heavy load (e.g. accelerating through a corner)
