It's pretty easy to spot if there is an officer behind you, or in front of you in the median. Otherwise, there are limited spots to sit for enforcement. In the words of the last officer to pull me over for blasting away from a red light "Look around next time before you do something like that"

On my last trip, every police officer I encountered had the radar on, blasting away, so that my V1 picked it up far, far in advance. Even the WV SHP with ENFORCEMENT across the back of his cruiser that came flying up behind me was blasting KA radar for miles.

 

I'll be heading out west soon. Debating taking the radar detector with or not. Most speed limits are 70/75 mph out there. In effort to get better mpg, plan on staying under 80 Are you driving well north of such speeds?

 

Heading to vegas again?

 

I consistently set my cruise control at 12 over and have never had an issue. Even at 12 over, lots of cars moving faster than me.

That being said, I have no tickets or accidents on my record, good credit, and I'm married in my 40s. A ticket wouldn't be the end of the world for me

 

^^My last actual ticket came from your home state (swain county)! Cost me damn near 5 bills to get it reduced to an equipment failure using a lawyer so I don't have to come back. Supposedly 71 in a 55. In IL you're likely to get run off the road going that slow. A ticket wouldn't hurt either, but may raise rates. Right now they're practically dirt cheap for the car at ~$700/12 months full coverage with relatively low deductibles ($500/$100 col/comp respectively).

 

As an Official Old Man, I agree with Rochester. You're asking for a ticket. Texas has "exhibition of acceleration" in its penal code. I would accelerate smartly but never a drag strip type launch from a toll booth.

 

FWIW, although Canadians drive ridiculously fast on the QEW, it's been said their traffic courts are deadly serious about hooning.

 

Hm well on the flip side, interstate toll rows are straightaways with high visibility, no intersections, and pretty predictable traffic patterns, so it's probably one of the better places to launch (outside the racetrack).

I may be getting old but I'm with the guys saying launches should be reserved for back roads or highways with cornfields, forest, cow pasture ect on both sides or empty interstate (in Mexico of course) ie places with no intersections and few other cars. Toll booths are a good place to get caught by cops or traffic cameras and are bad enough with all the s3#%ty drivers out there.

 

I guess it depends on how you define launch.

Handing over your $, saying thanks, and dropping hammer from a 2 mph roll isn’t super dangerous.

Y’all sound like a bunch of pansies. Be situationally aware and have some fun. I’ll do a WOT run through the gears up to the speed limit if I’m the first car at a red light too.

 

I like to accelerate smartly, but am much more cautious about where I do it. Besides, my thrill is lateral acceleration.
