I know in a power hungry market who's first thought is a tune and supporting mods I'm a minority, but I'd prefer the light weight and tossability of the GR86 over straight line speed. Far more opportunities in my life to enjoy handling than there is to do 0-60 and 0-70 runs.

I feel like a lot of the complaints reviewers are giving the new Z would easily be fixed with the basic mods we all do. I keep seeing the same thing. It has too much wheelspin, suspension is too soft, it has body roll, etc. OK, so throw on some nice wider wheels, grippy tires, sway bars and some suspension and it's a totally different driving experience.
But then again, maybe the "performance" version should come with that stuff. I think the price is too high to then have to spend another few thousand on supporting mods.
I think the newer 86 is supposedly a bit faster... but if it's anything like the first gen then I think it's simply just too slow. My friend has one and it's painfully slow. And there isn't really a reliable or cheap way to get any more power out of it.

Definitely worth a consideration as a car for the future, however I just don't like the looks of the car. I didn't even like the looks of the 370, which is what lead me to a G.

Accounting for the 0.3 second roll out adjustment I don't think was around back in 2009, you're talking 14.3@101 vs 14.0 @102 in the quarter mile. While I'm sure the G37 would pull away at 90+ mph, where can you actually exercise that kind of acceleration outside a track? Like I said, I'm sure I am in the minority here, but acceleration beyond 100 just isn't something I consider important.
I'm also of the mindset that unless you're jockeying for position in the stoplight grand prix (and who doesn't enjoy that!) the difference in 5.7 vs 5.4 seconds in the dash to 60 isn't that significant,

I'm definitely exaggerating here but what I was trying to say my definition of the ideal balanced car has around 400-500hp. Plenty of power to get the car up to speed and toss around sideways if you fancy car control and just enough traction to keep you planted if you want grip.

Outside of AWD, I haven't driven or seen many cars with that kind of power having much traction from a stop, on street tires. But hey, we're all looking for something different. I find anything that can run the quarter mile in 14 or less to be more than adequate for street driving.
Winding out my old G is definitely something I miss--nothing like a good NA motor and a high redline.

If I was an automanufacturer struggling with my identity and a direction forward (cough cough Nissan) I would be monitoring this chat very closely. Lots of good comments and ideas within.

I guess so, but they even changed out the turbos.. I mean it's awesome but at the same time, it's not very representative of what the average modder will be able to achieve. I'd still expect pretty good numbers on stock turbos nonetheless. It will be fast after basic mods and a tune!
