I'm a Bimmer guy coming over to the G37. An E39 M5 properly sorted is an almost unmatched drive. Yes, there are faster cars now, but overall the feels!! I would possibly be willing to go with a Q50RS depending on M5 mileage and what major service it may need soon.

I think it is the same transmission, both use the RE7R01A 7-speed automatic. It may just be programmed differently for different applications.

I just returned a Redsport( loaner) I had for 2 days and no way is the tranny the same, mine almost shifted like my 09 G37 tuned. The shifts in Sport+ with firm and fast( paddles 100% for two days). The only thing I didn't like is it wouldn't engine brake on down shifts as much as my 09. I'm thinking because the gearing is different. But I would trade mine in for one( wife said no tho) LOL
but the thing rips!
And lets remember our tranny is only good for 330 WHTQ or so. They wouldn't use that in the redsport as the WTRQ is too close to that

I've had a problem withe the rear timing cover gasket failing on my 2010 G37. The car is currently at the shop getting fixed.
I just received an invite from Inifiniti to a 3 day private day sale claiming up to $10,500 off 2016 Q50s.
I've been considering trading in the G37 and my 2000 M5 for a new Q50 Red Sport. The MSRP on a RedSport is $54K - $10K discount - $20K for trade-ins puts me at around $26K + fees and tax...tempting
Thoughts? Not realistic? This is Canadian pricing, BTW.
The underrated HP numbers make it very tempting.

What ANMVQ is saying is that the RE7R01A can handle a max tq of 330 lb/ft or so at the wheels. The Q50RS is listed as 350 lb/ft, which is ~300 lb/ft at the wheels. Any engine tuning of the Q50RS will easily bump that to over 330 lb/ft at the wheels, thus placing the transmission in a area of increased failure. Hence, anyone who flashes this car will need a new transmission.
The transmission has long been the Achilles heel of this car, either in G37/Q50 or in Q50 form. I've wondered why they didn't use the transmission from the M56, as that car puts out 417 lb/ft of torque.

I think you guys are missing the point about the transmission in RedSport.
At this power level a nice shifting automatic transmission isn't good enough.
This model badly needs a DSG or manual, or something else, but what it received (the same gtransmission as every other Q50 model, maybe tuned but still the same).
Let me put it this way, the first time I drove the e39 M5 I had a **** eating grin on my face and right away though I gotta have one.
The first time I drove the RedSport, i was like meh, it's nice, a lot of power, but no soul, just blah.

I almost traded in my sedan for a premium 3.0t today. They were giving me the pay off on my sedan which was insane because it's not even worth the 17k I owe on it. Only reason I didn't was because it was a lease 499 a mo with 15k miles per year and I don't know if I was able to handle that payment and also insurance for it since I only pay 120 for my g. Man I wish I would of been got it I would had to pay the taxes, first mo and also taxes and fees
