Love the G37!! Bitten by 'mod' bug....

OK!!! it’s been a busy couple of weeks since picking up my 2012 G37X Sedan…I’m still learning a lot of the interworking of the car, ride, feel, etc… I’ve got a lot of modifications done already and just waiting on a few other add ons to be delivered. (big thanks to all the veteran G37 owners here for great insight and examples of what to do and 'not to do' on the car...)

My goal for this car was to keep it ‘stealthy’ in terms of performance while maintaining the quality ride and comfort. I’m going to keep this car (for the time being) relatively mild mannered compared to my M35 that I had. I’m very happy with the stock mufflers for sound quality, but had to tweak the mid pipe tubing a little - I replaced the stock piping from the resonators to the mufflers with larger diameter piping - 2.25” The sound is still quiet however I do notice a greater deal of flow within the exhaust. I finally got my car tuned today and I’m very pleased with the results of the little amount of performance mods that I added. The car responds very well in both ‘Drive’ and ‘Drive Sport’. I got my usual 5 Maps that I had on my M35 to use on the G.

My list of mods are:

Stillen Grounding Kit
Motordyne M370
Modified Midpipes (2.25”) while keeping the remaining stock exhaust set up
Aftermarket exhaust tips (oval - double wall - slant cut)
Interior LED lighting
Morimoto D2S bulb replacement (XB 5500K)
Hoen fog light bulbs (3000K)
Aftermarket front lip spoiler
Light Window tint -all around
de-badged “INFINITI” from trunk

-upcoming mods:
cross-drilled rotors
Akebono or Hawk ceramic pads
front outer tie-rod replacement
front sway bar link replacement

Thanks binewt!! I actually just posted on another thread the link to a video that I did with the M... I did the 08 sport bumper swap, it really changed the appearance of the car (compared to the 06 sport bumper)... I plan on doing the same to the G since I have the base front bumper, the G37 sport front bumper looks more unique...

Some years back, I got flack from a few people in the forum for welding on new tips to the OEM mufflers. And I was only mostly satisfied with my solution at the time. However, if I had seen your project here, that's exactly the pair of tips I would have bought.

Oval, rolled, 15* cut, double-walled and resonated, and all the way to the cans. Very well done, OP.

From an engineering perspective I would skip on the mid pipe section. It wont do you any good if you initially have choke from the cats and Y pipe then open it up and then choke again at mufflers. It creates an unnecessary lost of back pressure at certain points only to be gain it back again. IMO by doing this you could actually lose power.

I see your point...I did the same set up with my M35 and was able to maintain a 'quiet' ride and still have 'enough' power to make it enjoyable

I don't track my car so this set up works well for me.

My G37X sedan is plenty quick for me after I got the tuning and still very quiet....I think if I decide to add more performance to the car, I'll do the CBE system.... Been over at Fast Intensions and almost had them build a CBE for my M, but decided not to...might hit them up later for the G but it's not priority on my mod list right now.

Here's a video I shot with my M35, the set up of stock mufflers and aftermarket ypipe/midpipes etc....car ran fine and the cabin noise was enjoyable.

Yes...even before I made my decision of picking up the G, I did not like the exhaust tips so I was figuring out ways to make it look different...then read your post....

I've been looking at the G35/37 for quite some time and really couldn't decide to get the coupe or sedan....A friend of mine has a G35 and converted it to an awesome track car, I thought I was going to go that route but instead I went for the newer engine platform (37) while having the room of a sedan. I knew I didn't want the M37 because the modification parts weren't readily available like the G37 -- kinda went through that with the M35...

...not a modification, but a necessity...I'm changing out the in-cabin air filter! I had a feeling to check the filter since buying the car used a week ago -- and I'm glad I did! Dealer didn't bother or just didn't know how to get access to it.

While I have the glove box taken apart, I'm going to install a T5 LED bulb for the glove box lighting

"....two birds with one stone...."

Nice man!! I like the bulb mods, inspired to buy some myself. Considering the debadge and possibly the grounding kit (never did before, difficult?), might I suggest the stillen gen 3 or takeda CAI intakes if you haven't already love the sound paired with the m370!! Fellow '12 g37x sedan owner

hey jroyalty7!! thanks brotha! great car indeed - '12 G37X sedan

the interior LED lighting kit I picked up from a guy who's provided lots of LED kits down here in So Cal. I order thru his eBay store and it's pretty inexpensive - done it to my M as well.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/130932833351?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

As far as the T5 bulb, those are hard to find online, but DDM Tuning is down the street from my house so I just drove over and picked one up - less than $1.50 (pure white). The Morimoto D2S bulbs (XB 5500K) I picked up thru the RetrofitSource - only $50...

The grounding kit I picked up at Stillen, it was tempting to buy more mods when visiting their store - like a kid in a candy store - The kit is not hard to install...they provide good instructions. I think it took me an hour to install. I lined up the wires to their appropriate connecting points before actually starting the install so I can get a good layout of where they need to go. I had a grounding kit on my M, but the points were totally different.

I was thinking about the CAI or Stillen Gen 3, but I'll be moving to CT next month and just not too sure how they will perform in the winter months...I'm from Cali so installing them here is no problem. I see you're in NY, any issues with rain/snow with your intake? BTW, I'm on the fence about lowering the car...gonna make my decision next spring - after a full winter under my belt. Is your car lowered?
