I wouldn't want to drive an 11 year old BMW with no warranty. I just traded in my 2010 335xi with 94,000 miles on it for a 2013 G37x. It was a CPO so I had a 100k mile warranty. It was in for service a LOT and it was expensive. $350 oil changes for example. Driving without a warranty is not something I would recommend.

I never did understand why the G is compact and 5 series GS's and E Class are a class above/bigger when they are so close. I checked all of the specs in the E350, the GS350 and the A6 along with the G37 and they were so close if not higher (like interior volume of the G37 compared to the 530i) that it was ONE of the main reasons I chose the G. Just my observations.

The 530i feels a lot bigger inside. And the trunk hands down is more space

Oil changes are $79 here in Indiana at the bmw stealership.
$350??? Your 335xi was an n54 twin turbo. The 530i is an m54 that is normally aspirated and cost less to maintain. This 530i with only 80000 miles cost $9000 and still looks like it was designed last year. The2013 g cost between 25-30k. Don't think I'll have $15-20k in repair costs over the next 5 years. That was my thinking on this switch.

You are correct. Oil change is like $100. I was thinking of the Series A, Series B maintenance they make you take every year. The price you paid is great and if you are comfortable with the maintenance, that's all that matters. I've owned several German cars i.e. BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and my experience was that they are very expensive to maintain. With high mileage and no warranty you are certainly rolling the dice.

Anyhow, good luck. I hope you enjoy your new (old) ride.

I can do a lot of the maintenance myself. My Dad and I are going to replace the spark plugs and ignition coils and the rear window seal this weekend. He has had really good luck with 3 Porsche's. One being a 2001 Boxter. He now has a 2013 Boster S and a 2014 Cayenne GTS. He is not doing his own maintenance on these new cars though, Ha. I think Porsche has the best reliability among the German cars. Ill find out how BMW is.

Actually Porsche has been in the top tier for reliability worldwide for a while now, here's 2013 ratings

That rear window seal is going to be the easiest job ever. Its more of a rubber trim piece than a seal. The window is sealed from the inside, the outer rubber trim/gap filler (that clearly looks like a seal) is prone to cracking and becomes brittle. Replacement is inexpensive even by BMW standards, like $40. A plastic hook type tool to clean out the channel and a shop vac is all your need.

If your rear window is leaking water, this "seal" won't fix it. Hope this makes sense.

The window is not leaking but the outer seal has some cracks and it's time to replace. I purchased the seal for $35 so YA, not bad

One thing about this car that is very familiar to me after driving a G for so long is every time I shifted into drive I pulled the gear shift closest to me for DS mode out of habit. I never drove in the normal D mode. This 530 has a gear shift that works exactly the same way and DS is displayed in the instrument cluster in the exact same spot as the G37. However, the DS mode in the 530 has way more of an effect on the shifting and overall feel. I really only use it when wanting to drive in a more aggressive way. In DS mode it will stay in 3rd gear until you reach 40mph even if you take your foot off the gas. So just driving around town in no hurry, or on the freeway, I use D mode. In DS it will not shift into the final gear, 6th. Also the manual shifting in DS mode is the opposite of the G37. So that takes some getting used to

JD Powers is intrinsically biased (they take money from the folks that make the products they rate). In other words, we are not JD Powers customers, the car companies are. But in this case, other sources of info like CR and True Delta also have Porsche rated very highly lately as well.
