Gas Milage - Gauge problem

So I filled up last Monday, always use premium 92/93. Car just hit 30k. I filled up Monday, gauge showed full, drove about 100 miles and the gauge was under 1/2 a tank Took it to the dealership and they said there was no thrown codes and they were not sure what the issue is. Told me to wait until this tank is empty and fill up again to see if it triggers anything. So went to top off yesterday....only put in about 8 gallons and the pump tells me its full. Get into the car and the gauge reads 1/2 tank as well as the center console fuel tells me I have barley over 100 miles until empty......I drove my car 8 miles yesterday and it went down about 1/2 a quarter of a tank on the gague. Anyone else ever have a problem similar to this?

Pretty pissed that I clearly pointed this issue out and dealership didnt dig more to find the true problem

There you have it. Go back now that you've jumped through their hoops and let them know it's still acting up.

It's not a mileage problem.

If your tank is completely full but the gauge reads lower than full, the issue is from the fuel sending unit in the tank that reads the fuel level. If you take the fuel pump out (under passenger rear seat) and clean the contacts on the float with CRC electrical contact cleaner and a Q-tip and also do the float on the other side under the driver side rear seat, it will probably correct the problem. But not guaranteed. It may come back though.

However since your car is under warranty they should replace them at no cost to you.

Thanks for your input guys. Not a dummy when it comes to cars, just new to the G37 world.

Having the same issue. Erratic gauge readings. Car is out of warranty.

Can you elaborate on how to remove the seat, etc? How difficult is this to do?

Pull straight up on the front edge of the seat cushion on either side. It pops right up without any tools. Then the other side.

I had that problem about a year ago. My gauge wouldn't show any higher than 2/3 full no matter what. Both fuel sending units had to be replaced (yes, they're accessible under the rear seats).

I realize this is probably just a band aid (or perhaps preventative maintenance if you are not experiencing this problem), but I recall reading on some of the Z boards that running Techron concentrate through a couple tanks can sometimes help or at lest improve symptoms.

Update: So this is the text I got from my infiniti rep - "Hey man..so we've literally checked everything on your car. We pulled both units out of the tank and tested the cluster. Everything looks good. We filled the tank up no problem. The transmission is working fine. If there were an issue with the transmission it would throw a code."

So I will be picking up my car shortly to see if the gauge is reading correctly or not. From his response though, it has me extremely worried that they didnt find any issues. Very odd that this is the second time bringing my car in for the same 2 issues to only be told nothings wrong.....hope this doesnt bite me in the **** in the long run.

Picked up the car, gas gause is showing I have a full tank...yet cluster says 209 miles until empty told my service tech....good news is DS mode is now working as it did before with rev matching so I'm happy with at least that outcome

$1000 to replace the sensors from the dealership. They are saying the pump side one comes with the pump so that is replaced too?! I thought i saw on another thread that both sensors can be replaced without replacing the pump?

Im going with a $6 bottle of techron for now. $1000 is craziness.

Just to confirm- how many gallons can our tanks hold? I read 20 gallons on specs. My first fill up since getting the car, at 20 mi to empty, I filled up and was only able to get 17 gallons in. Where did the other 3 gallons go?

It is the reserve fudge factor to prevent people from running out of gas and creating a traffic or safety hazard problem for others on the road.
