2012 G37x, 26.5k miles, RUST.

I was washing my car the other day and noticed ~6 spots on my trunk where rust is starting to form, as well as run down and stain the paint on my trunk. I bought this car in Nov of 2013 and it has 26.5k on it, so naturally, I'm a bit pissed that it's rusting already.

I took it to the dealer and got exactly what I expected. "Paint issues aren't covered under warranty!". They even insinuated that perhaps I don't wash my car enough, as if it's perfectly reasonable for a car to just start rusting with <30k miles because it isn't washed frequently. FWIW, I wash my car once a week or so, but I live in a snowy climate. Do I have a legitimate claim here to keep fighting this? I feel like my car is far too new for this to be acceptable, but my dealership is blowing me off.

If you have the luxury of another Infiniti dealership I would go get a second opinion. I had rust on the edge of my trunk. When the other Infiniti dealership denied coverage, the other got it covered for me.

Ouch. That shouldn't be happening so early on your car.

My guess is that when they drilled holes to install the chrome spoiler, something didn't get primed. That's a factory issue. Take it up with corporate if you can.

Rust is in fact covered under the factory warranty. There is also a corrosion warranty as well. Makes me want to go take a look at my car and see if there is any rust forming on it. I actually had a rust spot show up on my IS300 trunk lid and the dealer replaced the entire trunk lid under warranty.

It should be under warranty. My G37 had bubbling paint/rust on top left of the chrome trim at 60K km. And I took it into Guelph Infiniti dealer, and no questions asked they gave me a loaner for the time it was being repaired.

Thanks for the info guys, I have the whole warranty book but it's back at my parents place so I couldn't check yet. I feel like this dealership has been trying to push me around since day one because I'm relatively young.

My car certainly doesn't do this, it is as new as the first day when I bought it. I wash and quick wax it at least once every month. I wouldn't surprised if the previous owner has never washed the car in 26.5k miles, and your pictures show the car is filthy. There's no way I would leave my car like this more than a couple weeks. Factory warranty covers only rust through.

Leaving your car like that for a few weeks shouldn't result in rust, no matter what your preferences are.

^^ You are right, I don't think the damage was done in just a few weeks. My bet was on the previous owner had never washed the car. The paint was weakened to a point that a nasty winter like we had this year could allow the salt practically chewed through the paint and exposed the metal.

Doubtful, as most dealers give a complimentary wash every time you do an oil change.

Yes its POSSIBLE, but highly doubtful. EVERY human being that has blood running thru their veins washes their brand new car ATLEAST once.

Not for leased car owners. I know quite a few, and their cars are filthy. The only time the cars are 'cleaned' is when it is raining.

Assuming this is isolated to the area around the chrome lip, I think GoFightNguyen is spot on. A previous car I had that came with a factory lip spoiler had similar rust spots within the first year due to poor installation. BMW replaced the trunk with a new one and it was all good.
