I go 6k on Pennz Platinum, used to go 5k but went 6k and got a UOA and it was very good, so 6k it is
I also use the bigger M56 oil filters, much bigger than the Gs thimble-size filters.

I DIY oil changes @3750.

I mostly do it so that I have receipts to validate I've followed the manufactures recommendations while I'm under warranty. A long time ago I had a warranty claim denied because it was claimed I hadn't followed the maintenance recommendations. I ended up having all the receipts so the dealer eventually took care of the issue, but it was still an inconvenience.

If you buy synthetic on sale (like at Walmart... good prices there) and DIY, it's easily less expensive than any shop for basic dino, and you can run twice as long with better quality lubricant. Win, win, win.

The key here is DIY for synthetic oil changes. Otherwise, yeah, it's pricey.

This is particularly beneficial to help prevent engine wear in the cold climates like ours. Synth is proven better for cold engine starts.
My DIY synthetic oil change costs me around $35. There is always a top brand on sale a Canadian Tire stores. Well worth it.

It's spelled "Nguyen" actually. As in, All I do is Nguyen, Nguyen, Nguyen, no matter what.


I agree that DIY'ing oil changes is cheaper than paying someone else to do it, but DIY oil changes at 4000 miles is never going to be as cheap as someone who DIY oil changes in a (reasonably) longer OCI.

About the same cost here. Last time I changed my oil was April 2013, at 12500 miles. I paid $24 for Penzoil Platinum at Walmart, and $13 for a K&N filter at Amazon.com.

I'm at 16500 miles now, so probably won't be changing the oil again until this April. Obviously I don't drive much.

Wrench off. Makes removal very easy.



You know, as I think about this, I need to pick up some oil drain plug gaskets. Didn't change it out last time.

I think a big variable has been over loked as well. How hard do you push your engine? I get the revs up pretty quick at least once a day. If your driving miss daisy then the oil lasts longer

exactly and that is one of the reasons I rather do my OCI every 3750 like it is recommended because I do like to step on it at least once a day or so so I rather be on the safe side and also want to keep the recommended maintenance so everything is on record for the future incase of a warranty claim.

I had to drive to my hockey game at the Kitchener Aud last night during the heavy snow fall.
It was a blast driving my lowered G37S, on good snowtires, through the 5" snow covered roads at 9:30pm.
Along my 15km route, there was a 'Go' bus stuck against the curbside snowbank, spinning his duellies. On my way home at 11:30 there was a GRT (city) bus also stuck against the curbside snowbank.
I just drove around both of them. It's nice to know I can still get around in weather that a bus can't seem to manage it's way through.

without googling - since it's easy to find both sides of an argument - you guys have any opinions on the veracity of the following: switching to synth on a higher mileage car (mine has 70k miles, and - I'm the second owner for the past 35k - to the best of my knowledge, has always used dino,) can "dry out" the seals vs. sticking with dino juice, and actually cause leakage?


Right now, I stick with the 3750 schedule, since I'm exclusively city driving, and I just have the dealer do the change (at $39, it's not even worth the hassle for me to DIY.) However, I'd love to switch to mobil-1 and diy, but I've been very leery of the above.

I've read where you don't want to switch until you get two dino OCI under your belt, but may simply be repeating an Urban Myth. IDK, really. I've also read where with today's synthetics, you can switch over at any time after that.
