G37 Completely Immobilized

This past Saturday was by far one of the most frustating days I've experienced in a while as my G37 was completely immobilzed.

I went to Disneyland on Saturday morning at 8:30AM and parked in one of their outside lots. My friends and I got our belongings before locking the door. We decided to leave Disneyland to go out to eat somewhere and got to the car shortly before 4PM. Everything seemed normal. I popped the trunk open with the key fob before unlocking all my doors. We loaded the car and closed everything up.

Now that I am in the driver seat and about to start the car, the car will not start. I noticed on my dash that the red car icon with the key symbol keeps blinking. This ticking noise is also coming from the glove box area. After several more attempts of starting the car, it just wouldn't start. My trunk was also unable to open with the in-cabin triggers (now I can't even get my stuff out of my trunk either).

I called the 24-hour Infiniti roadside assistance and explained to them what what was going on. I was informed that my car is completely immoblized for security reasons and that it would need to get towed to Infiniti. A flat bed tow truck was scheduled to arrive about an hour from when I made the call.

Due to complicated Disneyland security procedures, the tow truck had to wait the toll gate for about 30 minutes before he was escorted into my section of the parking lot. The tow truck driver was unable to put the car into neutral (using the override technique with the screwdriver in the shifter area). He had to use skid plates for the rear tires and finally got car hooked up. We arrived at Infiniti of Tustin. The service department was already closed, but luckily I was able to arrange a loaner car before.

I noticed that the LED's in my taillights were blinking rapidly when the car was put off put off the truck. I had to manually lock all the doors before leaving in the G25 loaner car.

Has anyone else experienced a similiar issue with their car? Possibily a dead battery? The manual said that this could have been a security feature on the car that enables when someone tries to break into the car. The car is currently at the dealership as I am awaiting their call to know what's going on.

Is it possible your keyfob died and had no battery? Did you try putting the key into the slot to see if that fixed the problem?

Yes, I tried putting the key fob into the slot, but that didn't work either.

This brings up a good question. How does one get the trunk open from the inside of the car?? I know there's a pull rope in the trunk, but unless you got gorilla arms, it's challenging to reach it from the inside.

Although it's not clear if the failure was with the fob of the car, it's probably a good idea to bring the spare fob with on long trips.

I'd say dead battery. Why didn't the tow truck driver attempt to jump the car?

It actually may sound like a dead battery. If you hear a ticking sound when trying to start a car, it may not have enough power to start...

After all this, it turns out the car had a dead battery.

Before putting in a new battery, Infiniti of Tustin checked the charging system of the vehicle and everything seemed ok.

is this is a common issues with our G's? I've been reading different threads online from owners saying that the batteries had faulty cells and needed a replacement. I just hope that the new battery will not fail on me again.

I took my car in for an oil change yesterday and the infiniti tech told me my battery failed inspection. they replaced it free under warranty which was nice.

Mine had to be replaced under warranty in the 3rd year at around 48K miles as well. Symptom: slow start.

Battery cells sometimes lose their ability to hold a full charge.

Pick up a battery hydrometer to check individual cells. About $10.00

I'll have to check under the hood, but I don't believe the stock battery is sealed. In years past, we used to top off (to the button of the filler caps) the fluid with distilled water.

Is this still done/recommended?

I have a 2010 with the stock battery. My battery isn't sealed and I check the water levels a least twice a year. I topped-off the battery (to the botton of the filler caps with distilled water) last month.

Since maintenance-free (sealed) batteries are the norm these days, it's easy to forget to check and maintain the battery water level.

Had the exact same problem yesterday. My wife went to get in our 2009 G37x and the doors would not unlock. You could hear a very faint noise inside the car everytime the remote was pressed, but the doors would not unlock. Purchased a red top optima battery yesterday, problem solved. Old battery was at 7.8 volts. This sight aided in the installation of the battery, thanks.
