Risk of Spoiler Removal

I bought a 2009 G37 sedan 6MT a couple weeks back. The car is fantastic, the only thing I didn't like was the spoiler added over the chrome lip on the trunk lid. For this reason, I got the dealer to agree to remove it at no charge if I decided to do so. I have attached an image below of my car next to what it would look like without it.

What is the risk of having the body work done to remove this? From what I have read, they will have to fill the holes, sand it, and repaint. Also, they will have to re-wire the middle brake light from the spoiler to the light in the rear window. I am trying to decide if it is worth the risk or if I should just live with the spoiler. The dealer is an Infiniti dealer, not just a random used car dealership so I am thinking they would do a good job?

Possible alternative ~ Black out the chrome? I would figure taking the wing off would leave the paint different hues in spots because of how long it's been there.

Maybe the dealer has another used black Infiniti on his lot and he'll just switch trunk lids, otherwise that is a lot of work. Good luck w/ whatever you end up doing. Not really a fan of those spoilers, mainly because they leave the chrome in place but also drilling into the lid isn't ideal.

just black it out..

I did mine at work to show someone how to do it. This one is just plasti diped... now if the dealer agreed to do the work.. have them actually paint it. can really change the look of the car.

The old wing spoiler does look odd with the chrome lip on the trunk. However, since your car is black, that was great advice to simply paint it and walk away.

Another way to look at it is this: that particular spoiler is not a common thing. It most certainly makes your 2009 S-Sedan stand out from the rest. You really should keep it and learn to appreciate the unique look.

You could ask the dealer to take that off and replace it with the newer lip spoiler instead. The cost would probably be the same, if not, lower for them to do bodywork.

Yeah, but would the duckbill spoiler cover the mounting holes for the old wing spoiler?

probably cover

I would imagine most infiniti spoilers would have the same mounting holes. After market... probably not.

I'm pretty sure it will. The thing stretches across the whole trunklid, edge to edge.

Since the OP already has the wing spoiler, it's easy enough for him to go to the dealership and eyeball a G37 with the duckbill. That's the real answer, if he wants to go that route.

But I stand by my original advice: paint the chrome lip black (actually, satin or flat, or plastidip even), and keep the wing spoiler. It's unique looking.

Im with Rochester on this one. I highly doubt the lip spoiler will cover those holes. Lip has one hole on each edge, and I would have to guess that spoiler has 2 on each edge (Just like the G35's spoiler).

I would paint the chrome lip the same color as the car instead of a flat black, if I were to go that route. A flat black diffuser would look good, but to have a flat black piece in the middle of a gloss black trunk would seem a bit off, IMO.

I was thinking, flat black on the chrome lip, and flat black in the recessed diffuser area on the lower bumper. That would look great against the gloss black.

And then, being a black G, some Nightshades applied to the tails. http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/niteshades/

Thanks for all your responses. Here are some clarifications/responses:

1) The standard lip spoiler (which I do like) would not cover the mounting holes. That particular lip goes in place of the chrome bump. The backup camera is built into the chrome bump or lip depending on which you have. Replacing with the standard lip would have been ideal.

2) Replacing the entire trunk lid is not a bad option, but I'd have to buy one myself (expensive), or hope they would trade one. In that case, I would want the badging moved as well. I like the 'S'.

3) Painting the chrome lip black is actually a really good idea. I am not sure how well I could do that myself, but painting that Black Obsidian might make the whole thing look a bit more normal.

More comments are welcome!

What the hell is that ugly pos on the back of your poor Infiniti. Get that off there ASAP. You are ruining the image of G sedans everywhere. That would have been deal breaker for me.
