The 3M foam I used is about 3/4" wide and maybe about 5mm thick. Now I don't need to blow this car up!
I am having the same problem on my 2008 G35X. Whenever I hold the top of the cluster lid with my hand, it would not make any noise.

Samps:

Do you have a screenshot (with the cluster lid on) of the dash areas you actually inserted the foam tape? I've tried inserting foam tape in various areas however the results are variable. Seems like I'm not able to locate the proper area with the cluster lid on.

My 2010 G37 is developing this kind of squeaking/rattling noise behind steering wheel too and I'm also glad to find this thread. It'll be great samps or someone can take a photo to show exactly where to insert the foam.

Bump on this...I think Samps may have sold his G37 so I am wondering if anyone else would be able to help out.
