Why the name change?

Recent G37 owner, but have followed the car for a few years...from my understanding the G car really saved the Infiniti division. Even if that's not the case...clearly the G35/37 has the strongest following of any car in the line up.

So after the millions spent on branding, why would they change the name to Q50? Based on the early pics I think they have a winner, but IMO this is a dumb move...akin to BMW changing the 300 series or Chevy renaming the Corvette.

I don't get it.

It's just a name. No biggie. The average Joe/Joette won't really care what it's called. Infiniti has said they just want to streamline the lineup. I can see where they are coming from, really.

I think they might be better off calling themselves Nissan's "G" division. "G" is really a cool letter than Q/cute?

Seriously, one company's success is not necessarily a winning formula that can be copied to others. It just lost its uniqueness doing business this way, last I checked, innovation was what drove success. But anyway, can't wait to see some reviews on this car.

Agreed. The G37s tend to come with more standard equipment than MB and BMW

But is there really a dividing line between the definition of "rich" at 37-43k and 48-50k? So if I drive a G37, Im not rich, but if I drive a loaded 335 then I'm rich?

Personally, when I think "rich", I think supercars (Lambo, Ferrari, Bentleys, etc.) I dont think 3 series or C class.

Oh. Now I understand the comments.

..................Well, you dont like the styling of the Q50, and I think the 328i is a women's car. So we can agree to disagree.

i don't understand what so extreme with my question lol.
i made the assumption based on what you defined as a soccer mom car.
And I hope I clarified my viewpoint in the previous post.

So this new car....it has a hybrid option.

You can pair the hybrid option with all-wheel-drive.

And then, you can even add a complete sports package.

^ This car in your world, would be called a.....*****drum roll please****

G37HXS (G37HybridAWDSPORT)

Who in their right mind would put a f**cking badge such as "G37HXS" on their car?

So...with that being said...

I whole-heartedly agree with Infiniti's name change.

My only complaints with the name change is that it is too similar to Audi and I dont think cars and SUV's should have the same letter. Id prefer differentiation.

Audi has the Q5, Infiniti the Q50.
Audi is working on the Q6, Infiniti the Q60

And so on, and so on.

Then, with sport variants, Audi has the SQ5, and Infiniti will have the Q50S.

Most filthy rich people i know drive 80's Camry's, Accords or Civics. Some live in little huts, although i know of one who lives in a Mansion, still drives an old Accord.

Name change is fine with me. I'm more worried about looks, engine, cost, etc

It will be confusing to the average J and J. Although, for the record, Infiniti did have a Q for some time.

As for similarities with Audi, guess who started suggesting Q's be used for Infiniti?

“When you start researching what is available and not tied up with trademarks, there are not so many opportunities out there,” he said. He should know: he was at Audi in 2005 when Infiniti sued over the German maker’s use of the letter Q on its S.U.V.s. A settlement between Audi A.G. and Nissan was reached in late 2006. The agreement stipulates that Audi will use the Q prefix for only two models, the Q5 and the Q7. -- Johan de Nysschen, former Audi executive, current Infiniti president

Does this settlement only applies to the U.S.? Because Audi has a Q3 on the other side of the pond.

I can understand Infiniti wanting to do a name change, but as many folks have said.... the "G" saved Infiniti, so seriously, why didn't they just rename all models G50, G60, etc? All the world knows the "G" and it's been synonymous with Infiniti forever at this point, so why F*** with success. And I hate to say this, but as hard as I try, the look of the new Q is not winning me over, it looks too much like a bland looking M. No bad boy street edge kinda look like our G37s can look. I'm hoping the look of the new Q evolves into something with a bit more edge and sexyness in the looks department in the future. I wish Infiniti luck. I'm keeping my 2010 G37s Anniversary Edition sedan for the foreseeable future at this point.
